Will adding a 1 mile run every morning be worthwhile?

I need to start upping my run mileage a bit, and I can usually get 1 mile done in the mornings no problem, its rare that I wake up early enough to do 3. I’ve read that you need to jog for at least 12 to 20 minutes to get an aerobic benefit from it, but does that apply to the sum of the days jogging or each session?

Good question…weird one, though. I would imagine any running at all reaps benefits. However, I do not get any benefit unless I do 3-4 every other day. If I was you, I would run a set amount every other day…unless you just have a phenomenal recovery rate. My suggestion…find time to run more than 1 mile a day. You are getting sweaty for minimal benefit. Hope that helps.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I will be running a lot more than 1 mile a day. I currently run about 21 miles a week (doing runs in the afternoon), and am thinking of adding a 1 mile run every weekday morning to get another 5 miles in.

If you are going to run 5 single miles during the week all that will really do is pad your training log. In my opinion there is next to no real world endurance benefit in doing that.

It would probably help improve metabolism slightly, ~10 min of elevated HR.

To op though 15-20 mins would be far more beneficial.

Sorry for asking but how structured is you time that you can find (let’s say) 6-10 minutes to run plus a minimum of 10 to put your run gear on and take it off again etc. but not the extra 12-20 doing 3 miles would take? Not a physiologist so I’m not going to comment on the health benefits but it seems amazing to me that that extra 12-20 minutes is a deal breaker. Getting a good pool workout in before work is tough, Riding in winter if you work long hours is tough but a 3 mile run in the morning?

Running only 1 mile is barely enough time to warm up for a decent workout. But I love any length of workout in the morning. It helps loosen the joints and gets the blood flowing. I feel it helps in recovery from the previous days workouts and makes my afternoon runs feel way better too. It’s such a minimal investment in time you should just try it for a few weeks and see if it works for you.

maybe just me but it seems like he is saying he has 20 min before he goes to wrok, so will getting ready and running in there help, not will waking up early to run a mile do good.

Unless you are only running 3 miles per week, I’d say it’s a waste of time.

I do not believe it is worth it at all and you will not get any benefit. I would rather do 2 3-miler during a week instead.

Any extra running will improve your efficiency, which is something too many triathletes ignore in their running (it’s all about improving fitness for most). Most high-mileage runners go 20-30 minutes (more if running at a very high level) because it promotes blood flow to recovering muscles, and you may get some minor cardio. The main benefit of an added morning run is improved efficiency and recovery. That “what I learned at 45” thread that’s up has a lot of stuff on morning running if you are interested in reading other opinions.

if nothing else it is a good way to wake you up for the day. i dont think it will do any harm if that’s what you’re asking. it isn’t gonna drop 20 min off your marathon time, but it may make the morning hump at the office more enjoyable.

Not sure why people feel the need to decide on when you wake, and planning your morning and not answering your question, but my thought it that you’ll have little positive effect from it.
