Wife's first 'real' pedals

i was thinking of getting my wife some speedplays for her first clip-in pedals because of ability to click in on either side.

is this a wise choice?

I’d say so.

You could also consider Crank Brothers Candy for more platform if she’s not using carbon soled shoes.

You might want to go with a double sided SPD or the Crank Brothers. Has she walked in cleats before? She might appreciate the recessed SPD cleat.
