Just got a new set of wheels (Flo 30) but my 8 year old brake calipers won’t open wide enough. What kind of brakes are people running that work with new wider wheels on a road bike? I currently have Sora 3500 shifters so I’m looking for a compatible caliper if possible.
I have Flo 30’s and use them with Shimano Ultegra/DA/105 brakes, all 10-speed from within 5 years. I also used them on 11-year-ol Dura Ace calipers with no problem.
Not to be patronizing, but do you know how to adjust the caliper width by either re-doing the cable or using the adjuster screw?
I tried that and when I couldn’t get it to work I ask a mechanic at my lbs. These are nameless brakes on an old Allez. I wasn’t sure if newer brakes would go wider.

Dura-Ace BR-9000 or Red AeroLink.

Pfeh. I use 105-5700 and they’re fine for wide wheels.
Are there any spacers that you can remove? My brakes had a thick washer between the mounting post and the brake shoe that I moved to the back side of the mount. That allowed both brake pads to open up another 1-2mm. I needed that to fit my Flo’s.

+1.

Tririg Omega front, 6600 Ultegra rear. If you go with the tririg, either use wide training rims also or keep the FLOs on for training. Otherwise they need to be adjusted*** every time ***you swap wheels.
While I’d love to upgrade to lighter brakes, my Ultregra 6700 series work great and are easy to adjust when swapping from narrow rims to wide 28mm rims. Took me 5 minutes the other night.
I had the same issue. Moving to an used pair of SRAM aerolink brake calipers solved the issue.
There’s just one washer left. I thought it was for adjusting toe in. I’ve got them open enough, but there’s no power in back ( lever to handle bar) and the front keeps moving off center and the quick release is open to get the necessary clearance… Does anyone know of a shimano compatibility chart? I might try the 105 if I know they’ll work with the Sora levers.
SRAM Apex definitely works (and is cheap); I’m using them with my Flos.
How wide of wheels? The flos are almost 26mm at the widest part of the brake track. I’m planning on getting a pair of 105s as soon as I’m sure it’ll fit.

Older model Shimano brakes won’t work. Even old Ultegra doesn’t work. I know all of the current Ultegra, Dura Ace, and I’m 99.9% 105 work without any issues. If you are planning on buying 105, I’d swing by your local bike shop and ask if you can try the wheel in a bike with 105 before you buy the brake.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
That would’ve been a good idea, but I’ve got a pair of 105 5700 on the way already. Guess I’ll find out when I take it by the shop to put the new brakes on. At least the return policy at Competitive Cyclist gives me time to check. Thank you for the reply.
That should go over well.
Walk into the bike shop and say “Hey, I bought these wheels from a company that is bypassing the bike shops to sell stuff cheaper. Do you mind if I try out a bike that you have here to see if what I bought from them (and not from you) will actually work?”
Seems more like, “I want to buy a product you sell. Can I please check to make sure it works with the equipment I already own?”
The dick move would be to do this and then go buy online.

If you are planning to purchase a product from a store, what is wrong with checking to make sure it works with a product you already have before you buy it?
