Why no love for MAVIC Ultimate Tri shoes?

I think I’ve only seen 1 pair of MAVIC Ultimate Tri shoes in the wild ever…anyone know if they are just hard to get a hold of in the US, or is it the ugly neon yellow?

They seem super stiff & light from what I read–is there a supply chain issue they have or the ability to return them for size exchange—since I haven’t seen them in any stores in person. Nobody seems to stock them…

I love my Mavic Comete Ultimate. It’s a two piece shoe - a full carbon outer shell with an inner bootie and an ultra low stack height of just 4.5mm.

Looks like the result of want the least aero shoe possible lol

Bryan, with all due respect, that shoe you have is very different from the one I posted (click on the hyperlink taking you to the MAVIC site) for the Ultimate Tri shoe. It’s just over 200 gr & mostly mesh so has tons of cooling for summer riding. Only thing I didn’t like about it was color & that metal loop holder–seems like if the paint chipped it could maybe rust I’m thinking.

Mavic is a French brand, so depending on where you are, their distributed may be more/less developed. In Southern Europe I have seen Mavic shoes quite a lot, I had that very same shoe myself (in an earlier version)
Mavic WHEELS were very popular at some time (about 10 years ago) but seems to have disappeared. Maybe overall Mavic is not doing so well?

Here is an article covering a “recovery” and they are back on French ownership.
Unsure what happened (from Wiki),but “In 2019 Mavic was sold by Amer Sports to the equity firm Regent, LP. After some ownership turmoil it was sold to Bourrelier Group in 2020.”

Only coming in yellow does the shoe no favours…

Agreed 100%. Ugly color. If they even just had a basic black or white for this same shoe (not the Cosmic)…I don’t personally know anyone that has these. It would be nice to get some feedback on this exact same pair. I sent a message to Tim O’Donnell a couple years back when he raced on the Mavic shoes but being with Trek he couldn’t really say much about them vs Bontrager Hilo. I had read online from reviews they are super stiff which isn’t always a good thing–to the point of hurting the bottoms of your feet. I’d suppose that could be changed with a different insole.

Bright yellow certainly does have a safety factor built into it I suppose.

They are very popular on the World Tri circuit, many of the French athletes where them, but many others as well. I have a pair of them, and they are awesome. I had previously been using the Scott Tri Carbons (which were great, and had a tri set-up with a Boa closure, but were a bit too narrow, so my feet would start to go numb after 90min). What I like about the Mavics is that they ride like a carbon-soled road shoe, and unlike many of the tri shoes, despite the strap configuration, your foot stays put, so you don’t feel like you’re losing power moving within the shoe. I’ll caveat this by saying that I mostly am racing sprints and super sprints these days, so there’s definitely a premium on transition speed with how I use them, but they fare well in that respect. Like most try shoes, they have a heel loop, which is great for securing with elastics in T1 to set-up for a flying mount. One of the major design flaws with most tri shoes with the velcro straps is that if you ride on top of the shoes to build up speed, and are wearing socks, the velcro sticks to the socks, and can sometimes pull the strap right out of it’s loops… Not so with the mavics, firstly, they have added a notch near the end of the strap, that you can slide so that the loop catches on it, so it keeps the strap in place, it also secures them in their most open configuration for easy entry of the foot while riding.

Again, for longer racing, where transition speed is less of a difference maker, or if you are not a shoes in pedals/flying mount person, their value proposition is somewhat lessened compared to a regular road shoe. But if you do want speedy transitions, and a great shoe for flying mounts, they are very much a great option. They can be a bit difficult to source, although I got mine from R & A Cycles.

And say what you want about yellow shoes, but they are very easy to spot in the T-Zone, which can be an advantage as a legal form of marking your spot…

I can confirm, mine only lasted a little over a year until the metal belt holder rusted and broke.

My suspicions were just confirmed. Thanks.

I own a pair of Mavics. I love how they look and feel - I have wide feet, and the synthetic “knit” upper helps me not to feel as tight as in other shoes.

They are stiff enough and I can do 4-5+ hour rides without pain in them. I use Mavics for races mostly - no rust or other major wear signs. I bought them in Europe almost twice cheaper than the price on the official website.

Maybe, an unpopular opinion - but I think that that yellow color makes them the best-looking shoes on the market currently.

Can’t complain from mine, very stiff, great on hot days, the strap is super easy to adjust… Le Sang Jaune.

350 for a pair of bright yellow shoes? Nope. They’ll get no love from me for either of those characteristics.

Mavic does not currently have US distribution for any of it’s products.
