Why is my toe black and blue? **Somewhat graphic picture**

Before today, it hadn’t been hurting at all.

Friday - 5 mi. ez run
Saturday - rest
Sunday - 18 mi. bike race
Monday - 8 mi. ez run

I’ve had these Ravennas for 150 miles, so they’re not being broken in, nor do I think they’re worn out.

I was wearing cycling socks, could that be it? It hurts to walk:

Because you run! No I have no clue but my feet are always jacked up and right now my right foot has two nails that are black and blue and one blood blister on the side. I do not know why it happens but maybe the pressure we put on our toes while we run and cycle bruise the toes because the toenail acts as a wall that the under side of the toenail hits against? But again I have no clue but I just know that my feet are ugly but I have come to grips with that.

I don’t care how it looks…it hurts like crazy though! I’m used to it being black and blue but it doesn’t usually hurt this bad.

You have a pretty nasty subungual hematoma and needs drained (blood beneath the nail - common runners issue). You will lose that nail eventually as well. Of concern though is the surrounding redness since these do occasionally get infected - hard to tell from a photo, but it should probably be drained/checked out

yeah, same here. I’m walking around right now with 7 toenails still attached from this winter’s run training. dunno why it happens, but it will surely fall off eventually and you’ll be alright once the pressure is relieved (hence the pain). i wouldn’t probe around too much though - maybe just keep your schedule and that will help get the nail gone. once the pressure is relieved, the pain should subside.

i actually heard a story about a guy who ran ultrmarathons who would buy shoes too small weeks/months prior to an ultramarathon to get rid of all his toenails so he didn’t have to worry about the pain that you are experiencing right now due to overuse during the race. now that’s taking it to another level.

I had this once in the first nine hilly miles of an adventure race. Basically, it was because my shoe was too small and not forgiving - toe nailed kept pushing against the front of the shoe, particularly whilst going downhill. Hurt like a mother. Fortunately, the next leg of the race was MTB. Lost the toe nail and another one grew back - took a while though. Check out the shoes, clip the toe nails and watch your stride on downhills. Good luck.

Yeah that makes sense. When the pain and pressure gets too much for me I sterilize a needle and drain it. Probably not the best to do it on my own but I’m not gonna see a doc to get it drained. A few little pricks is all it takes to relieve the pain! Haha

If it’s still painful, I’d definitely see about getting it drained. My middle toe is longer than my big toe, so I get it with my middle toe instead. It took a LONG time before I lost the toenail. Last time it happened I was ramping up mileage for a marathon. After you get it fixed, just make sure your shoes have enough space in the toe box and you should be good to go (or at least as good as can be expected). I switched shoes and it helped markedly.

I just sized up a half size to 13’s after running in 12.5’s for 15 years. The black toe nails went away in less than 2 months. I am marathon training right now

I find that as I get older and during high intensity, my feet flatten out / swell / or generally get bigger.

Welcome to running. Keep your toe nails short.

Could it be your shoes are too tight? I get these blood blisters from time to time but usually caused by running right after swimming while my toes are all wrinkled from the water. usually gone in a week or so. How many MPW are you doing (runnning/biking)?

Not too much ATM…

15-25 running
80-100 biking

Working on base.

What Rroof said…I had one under both big toes and they had to lance them to reliever the pressure and get the blood out. It’s kinda cool, painless, and only takes about 5 seconds.

Read in a book, that nail trauma whilst running is frequently caused by the rough edges of nail continually being pushed and pulled against your sock as you run. So, the answer is: trim the nails as far back as you can stand. Then take an emery board and file them down till they’re smooth as a baby’s butt. No sharp edges, nothing that might “snag” on your sock.

Not too much ATM

thats good to know, I do none…

Rule number 1: No ATM.

Looks like that nail is a goner! Does it hurt at all? If it hurts I would pop it with a needle, if it doesn’t hurt leave it be.

It kills.

What’s everyone talking about pop it with a needle? Stick a needle underneath?

What Rod (rroof) said. The relief is instantaneous, when drained.

How do I drain?
