Why I hate trainer? Help need!

Today I could not ride in the morning, so I just tried (9pm) 1:30 in the trainer.
After 5’ I was already sweated more than 30’ in the road.

  • 15’ more I gave up !!!
    Frustating…
    Suggestions?
What do I need to grt motivated in the trainer?? Power Meter will help/motivate ??.

Use a fan…and if you need motivation, screw it just down a few cold ones.

There are a lot of threads on this subject.

^^^ Those 2 things took me from absolutely HATING the trainer to LOVING it!

Embrace the suck!

I should elaborate on my previous answer. I still hate the trainer, but I now love to hate it! Everytime I get on it, I know I am going to suffer, its going to be a battle and if I make it - I feel like I won! Like the recent post - you have to embrace the suck! Nothing teaches you to suffer on a bike like the trainer IMO. Like Jens Voigt says - the person who can suffer the most - wins!

TrainerRoad + Netflix/Hulu/ESPN >>>>>>> TrainerRoad + Sufferfest

But, the bottom line is Trainerroad and a TV are key.

Recently I’ve been putting on VR goggles and trying my trainer software out in virtual reality mode. It’s such a freaking experience, I can’t possibly explain it well enough to somebody that hasn’t tried it. The short of it is, it feels like your outside riding a bike path in the middle of the day, even though its midnight and raining outside

The screenshot is the image that gets sent to the VR goggles, so it’s warped and in stereo. You can look around in any direction, inspect your bike, look at the plants, etc…or just follow the workout routines and ride the path. I built a custom USB controller that sits underneath my front wheel, so as I turn my real handlebars, the handlebars in the “game” turn too and you can steer around. It’s a trip in VR mode.

I guess my point is, I agree that riding indoors on the trainer is horrible and I went to great lengths to eliminate the problem for me. You need some sort of entertainment, whatever that may be.

Which goggles are that?

The suggestions by others are key and worth repeating: get a good fan and find a way to either distract yourself or increase the focus on hitting your power targets.

That being said, I’m curious about what’s getting you so worked up in only 5 minutes. Is your trainer indoors and in a relatively cool area? Unless you’re riding in a non air conditioned area, you should still be warming up 10-15’ into a workout. Use your gears and adjust the resistance so you’re spinning easy. I find I can’t put out quite the same power as I do on the road, but there’s no reason that intensity levels can’t mirror what you feel on the road.

Personally, with the right music and a structured workout with power meter, I can get really into the workout and it becomes painfully fun.

As others have said a good fan is essential. If you enjoy music it can help so much. Pandora is your friend in this regard. It’s amazing how good music makes the time fly and the watts up.

YMMV,

Hugh

This needs a post of it’s own. Details, dude.

This. Giant fans, a nice large screen, Trainer Road and Sufferfest. 1hr on a trainer with that setup will make you feel like you just did a 3+ hour ride.

Wow, you’re taking this shit to a whole different level!

I used to despise the trainer and then I got a fan, TrainerRoad and sometimes added Sufferfest videos. Nothing makes time pass like staring at a bunch of power data… well except for the VR thing
I honestly believe that trainer workouts are much much more effective than outdoor ones, at least where I live. I ride outside once a week for longer rides but indoor is where he quality is.

Sometimes its hard to do focused work on the bike outdoors. Cars, street crossings, stop signs, lights, pedestrians, dogs, etc. A structured trainer workout can help you when you have power numbers to work with and you are aiming for something specific (like a 2x20 workout or similar)

PS3 usually buys me at least an hour. Usually playing NHL13 but going to try with the new GTA.

Please please please post a photo of you on the trainer wearing the goggles. We totally promise we won’t make fun of you.

+1 for the fan and the TV. Personally I get far more motivated by watching boxsets of your favourite TV series rather than watching things like Sufferfest, but whatever floats your boat I guess.

If you’re a heavy sweater, make sure you cover up the top of your headset, sweat’s a great way of corroding your headset and when you’re training indoors it tends to accumulate around the headset bolt. I just take a bit of plastic wrap from the kitchen and wrap it around the whole headset/stem.
