Why don't wetsuits have front zippers?

Seems that it would be easier to get out of a wetsuit if the zipper was in front. Would it be too uncomfortable to swim with a front zipper?

It’s slower if I remember correctly what Emilio told me before

Slower in the water or slower to remove?

21 years ago when I did my first race, everyone told me I needed to get a wetsuit so I went to a local sports shop and bought one. It was on sale and had the zipper in front and a nice rough surface and no collar up around my neck… a nice wetsuit for windsurfing. I wore it for a few races until I could get a more triathlon appropriate wetsuit. It did the job of keeping me warm and I was such a crappy swimmer that it likely didn’t impact my overall finish at all and I still think it was the fastest wetsuit to get out of that I’ve ever owned!

It’s so you can:

  • Ask the pretty girl (guy) to help you zip up
  • Tow someone during the swim

My first race I did that, The seam tore the front of my neck to shreds, and I swam really slowly, but that might be me out of shape.

Slower in the water the zipper is more or less always out of the water when you’re swimming if it’s on the back.

Also removal should always be a moot point unless your transition is like 10 ft from the water

Emilio said that? I wonder about the Liftoil suit that has a front zipper. Granted, not a wetsuit, but…

It was a while ago but I believe so i was asking along the lines of why isn’t there another zipper to get then bib John off I believe. As far as the lift foil suit your half correct, the female is on the back the male is on the front. I believe they tested both of those configurations and figured out the best for male/female.

less drag in the water… every swimming bodysuit that was on the market used a rear zip for the same reason.

Lots of wetsuits have front zippers… The Scuba ones, and some windsurfing ones. My Oneil Oasis even has a funky zipper that runs across the front chest from shoulder to shoulder.

Triathlon and swimming wetsuits have rear zippers to cut down on drag, as well as chaffing.
