Why does this happen? (simple bike chain/gear problem)

Keep in mind the bike is brand new with DA

The problem:
After I took my chain off and put it back on a weird noise started to come out of every single pedal stroke. It sorta sounds like if I were to pedal backwards as a noise behind my pedaling forwards. Its really annoying and doesnt sound super healthy for the bike.

Why?
Well, I don’t think its:
-Bad technique (I push the pedals with my hand and it does it…every single stroke.)
-grease. I don’t think its grease becuase it has very recently been greased.

For some reason, after messing with the derailleur a little bit it (pushing it back) alleviated the problem to a certain extent.

Could I have put the chain back on badly?

** Am I a moron? If so…I dont care! I’m trying to learn how to take care of my bike so pleease help :o)**

Follow the chain and make sure that it is not over the cage in the rear der. I once rode about 40 miles like that…

Pedal backwards in a stand, see if you have a tight link.

I just checked and everything seems to be in place. I have it on a terainer so its pretty easy to check.

i push it around with my hand and it makes a sounds every single stroke, and I can;t pinpoint where its really coming from.

gr.

Remove the chain again and ensure that all of the links move freely. You didn’t say how you took the chain off, but if you actually took the chain off the bike you may have removed a pin? Otherwise, you may have simply meant you removed the chain from the big ring but didn’t really take it off the bike. Or maybe you have a masterlink. Either way, damage could have occured to the chain and one of the links may be stuck/hard to manipulate. Putting a new pin in can also cause this if it isn’t done correctly. A stuck link would cause such a noise every revolution.

You cant find a rub with the bike in a stand? I think you need to get someone with better ears to check it out for you - did you make sure that your F Der is not rubbing by chance?

Be careful… had the same situation with an ultegra chain earlier this year on my last ride before CDA making sure everything was working right and the chain snapped ripping out my front derailleru

Double check the pins…my bike sounded like it was just a little off with the shifting and making a clicking sound every revolution nothing new as I did it myself but turned out to be a very bad day as a pin just gave way under normal load. LBS said it was very likely the chain I put on was not 100% set and that recently they have seen a ton of 10 sp shimano chain failures

Grease your chain??? That’s the cause of your problem

Actually, you might also want to check to make sure your wheel is back on straight.

OK I think this is an off-and-on kinda thing. I took my back wheel off, tried it again and it works…sometimes.

does it matter what gear combo I’m in? Unfortuntaely, I tried one…it worked…went to some others…came back…then that combo didnt work. and came back to it again, it worked.

strange.

I thought DA was unstoppable!! =)

You need Campy.

Is your derailleur jockey wheel rubbing against your largest cog?

Is your cassette on tight?

Is your chain routed through your rear derailleur correctly?

You said you took your chain off. I assume that means you broke the chain apart and then installed a new pin to put it back together. Do you have a stiff link where you joined the chain together?

Is your front derailleur positioned correctly (is it too low?).

brand new with DA

There’s your problem!

Go Campag.

Do you have a cadence sensor on one of your cranks? I had a similar problem, my cadence sensor was rubbing with every pedal stroke.
