Why do my cross country team mates refuse to wear running shorts?

.

Just have the girls on the team say they like guys in short shorts. That should clear up the problem quickly…

lol they are insecure about their sexuality. the same thing happened at my college XC. but i just stuck it out and wore reallyshort shorts. now everyone does it.

Same story here:

In my area we have a waterski-lift (a things that drags you around on a lake in circles on waterskis or wakeboards or whatever). So, all the super-cool kids go there with their wakeboards and wear their surfy style clothes. Baggy shorts that fall of their asses, Trucker hats (I really can´t believe they came back in style) and all.

Problem is : This is Germany, not California… the water is really cold. So they have to wear wetsuits wich makes them look about as uncool as can be. So they wear their baggy stuff OVER the wetsuits so the style stays intact.

Very funny!

Yeah I also have no clue how the hell broham culture brought back trucker hats, it’s ridiculous.

They really are pussies. Seriously I can’t believe the coach or older teammates let anyone get away with that. Tiny shorts are one of running’s proudest traditions.

And wearing boxers while running is just abominable.

Another question I have is, Why do brand stores not carry running shorts?

I was in a mall last week and went to a nike, adidas, and new balance store. They all had running shoes but guess which one actually had running shorts?

Was it the New Balance store? I don’t know if NB makes a ton of money on stuff for other than running, but am sure Nike and Adidas have a pretty good share of the market on basketball (and other sports) gear.

I wear my running short a lot. Before I found triathlons, I used to wear running shorts to work out at the gym. The only time I gave it much thought was when I am doing crunches or was on the leg press machine, then my lining would show.

Those do look nice. Although I don’t have to worry about anything bouncing around!

They look a little longer than traditional running shorts too. That may be more acceptable for the high school crowd.

same reason its now in fashion for guys to wear girls jeans. Stupidity.

Wow. What a group of judgemental jerkoffs. I tell ya, nothing grows the endurance sports community quite like a bunch of adult triathletes getting together and calling school aged XC runners “pussies” and “insecure losers” who are “uncomfortable with their sexuality” and “couldn’t back it up” just because of what they wear.

Really weak.

you know its true. we’re just stating the obvious.

young adults are pretty judgemental of each other. people on my cross country xc team used to give me weird looks the my freshman year when i just wore the short shorts and no top. maybe you had the luxury of being popular youre entire life.

It is nothing more than “the current trend.” In another 5 years, the HS shorts will be something different. It has nothing to do with insecurity over their bodies. Besides, you should hear what these same kids are saying about you when they see you out training in your short running shorts and spandex cycling gear. It usually has something to do with your sexual preference and your age.

When people are using equipment (clothing), that will actually make them slower (I guarantee wearing baggy shorts instead of running shorts will cost you at least 2-3 seconds a mile, maybe even more), it really does beg to question why. They are either a) a bunch of pussies who aren’t man enough to use the right equipment because they are afraid some reneck losers will make fun of them, or b) they are complete morons who don’t realize they are making themselves slower.

Now if they are just using this stuff for practice, I say no big deal, but if the coaches would let them race like this, that is weak.

What if a guy on the swim team decided to wear baggy surf shorts for racing instead of a speedo?

He is not wearing baggy shorts, just the copmression shorts, which many real T&F athletes wear. This has no relevance to kids wearing shorts to their knees.

They’re HS kids. Unlike the ultra competitive Type A jerkoffs that seem to frequent this forum so often, they’re doing sports for fun, not for the ego stroke. Get over yourself. I expect you are firing off questions to Lance as to why he’s so stupid and insecure with his sexuality that he wore baggies to run his marathons.

“What if a guy on the swim team decided to wear baggy surf shorts for racing instead of a speedo?”

On a H.S. swim team I’d probably congratulate him for getting off the couch and away from the Xbox, and choosing to participate in an active sport that he enjoys, and I’d be sure not to call him a pussy or suggest that he’s uncomfortable with his manhood. You must have really had a shitty time in H.S.

Oh, shit. I must be starting to get old. What the frig is “Broham culture”? The only time I’ve heard anything that sounds like “Broham”, it was in relation to cars. Like a Cadillac El Dorado Brougham- you know, old peopled up to the max…

I call BULL$hit!!! QUOTE: "I guarantee wearing baggy shorts instead of running shorts will cost you at least 2-3 seconds a mile, maybe even more."

That’s a ridiculous and unproven statement. Try running in both before you make a comment like this. I have and it makes no difference. If it does cost YOU two seconds per mile then it is YOU who is being the pussy, because it is all in your head and you need to get over yourself.

Also, trying to compare hydrodynamics of swimming to the aerodynamics of running is lame. Remember, it’s better to be thought a fool, than open your mouth and prove it.

Step off your bad self and leave the kids alone. I would venture a guess they run more weekly mileage than you and would whoop your ass during an XC race anyways. If you are beating them, then maybe you can talk, but why not just save the energy for your own training.

Again, if you haven’t run with or talked to any HS runners lately, it’s simply a choice based on fashion trends…nothing else.

If it does cost YOU two seconds per mile then it is YOU who is being the pussy, because it is all in your head and you need to get over yourself. **If it makes no difference, then why don’t real runner’s wear the baggy shorts? ** **** **BTW, 3 seconds per mile is less than a 1% difference at a 6 minuted mile pace. The fact that you do not feel a difference, doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Can you tell the difference between water than is 67 and 68 degrees? When I wear my racing shoes I don’t feel faster than my trainers per say, but I am still going to use the racing shoes, because they are faster. **
Also, trying to compare hydrodynamics of swimming to the aerodynamics of running is lame. Remember, it’s better to be thought a fool, than open your mouth and prove it. Not even talking about aerodynamics. The baggy shorts would make you slower due to extra weight (6- 8 oz maybe more when they get soaked in sweat), and also the added frcition and resistance against your bodies motion, expecially when you are trying to get good leg lift. Again to your point, if using running shorts instead of baggies makes no difference, why over 100 years of evolution of equipment in the sport has the absolute consenus become that you would wear a split or notch running short for racing?

Step off your bad self and leave the kids alone. I would venture a guess they run more weekly mileage than you and would whoop your ass during an XC race anyways. If you are beating them, then maybe you can talk, but why not just save the energy for your own training. **** Just because you called me out, I will tell you that a) I am a certified USATF coach, b) The last serious block of run training I did this spring was 10 weeks at 50 mph average mileage and c) the last open race I did on a certified course during this block was a 34:05 10K. I will let you decide how routinely I get my ass whooped by high school kids.

Again, if you haven’t run with or talked to any HS runners lately, it’s simply a choice based on fashion trends…nothing else. This is sad, when athletics is a fashion show. No, it is not the Olympics, but sports in high school should teach a little discipline, certainly the programs I came from did. If coaches cannot instill even the minimum discipline in a kid to wear a proper uniform and respect the sport, it says a lot about a program. My local town has produced numerous state and national championship level cross country performers and when I see them running, they are not in baggies.
