I don’t think thats crazy heavy.
Can’t say I have monitored weight while changing up my 3rd gen Speed Concept, but I’m sure it’s not far off that. They list the medium Ultegra build at 9kg (no pedals or add ons)
The Shiv TT seems to be one of the lightest options, I’ve seen smalls right around 7.5kg.
Even on the road bike side I’ve been surprised at how many bikes aren’t sitting right at the UCI limit in favor of aero and comfort.
What exactly is “old-ish”? I have a P2, but it’s a 2011. I consider that to be “old-ish”, but a lot of people might classify it more like an antique at this point.
I know both my P2 and my Shiv are right at the 20# mark w/o bottles. But I’m probably going to weigh both of them again as I prepare for IMAZ.
I have a P2C circa 2007 with some funky mods that probably weighs closer to 24-5 lbs (11+ kilos). Who cares? It blows away any of my other bikes for its use case.
And I’m not spending 5 grand to upgrade because, well, I’m old and because of training/position improvements, I’m faster than I was when I was producing 50-100 watts more 20 years ago.
That seems really heavy. I just built up (mostly, waiting on a chainring) my old (early 2000’s) Quintana Roo aluminum bike with a 1x9 setup, 11-34 cassette and flat bar with flat pedals. Bontrager aluminium wheels, nothing too crazy. I’m building it up as my my ride for going to Starbucks.
right now, with only the chainring missing, it’s at 7.7kg. And that’s an ancient aluminum bike.
(edit - chainring arrived yesterday - just weighed in at 17.2 lbs or 7.8kg all built and ready to go)
Yeah that’s very light. I’m not seeing many low to mid range Tri bikes under 8.5kg without pedals
I’m guessing mine is around 9 or just over without pedals but is also ten years old
Tri bikes haven’t gotten much lighter. The frames have gained a bit of weight with all the storage integrations, and the wheels have lost a bit. I wouldn’t worry too much, even an extra kg doesn’t add that much time…even on a hilly course.
There are probably some upgrades that you could do at low/mid cost to shave some weight post race (said w/o knowing your current setup):
TPU race tubes/spares 150g
Elite FLY bottles 50g
Monoblock cassette 100g
A non-ISM saddle (if you run one) 100g
Carbon cages (esp. upfront for the torp) 30g
Laceup shoes (ex. Giro Empires) 100g
That right there is well over a pound, and that’s not going for new wheels.
Lapierre aerostorm drs : dura ace di2, 73/87mm carbon wheels, race setup (bottle, BTA, garmin mount and pedals : 9.5kg
Triatlon bike is a bit heavy but with the same wheels and if i add clip-on aerobar than are mandatory on triathlon on the propel sl, difference will be around 800g so pretty negligable and in favour of the aerostorm in every case as he is more aero and allow me more comfy position (on extension)
yeah took some bits off today as done the long distance thing now until next year and it’s around 9.4 without the front and rear mount/cages. That’s with my powertap pedals which are over 400g, so 9kg with just 1 bottle cage and some decent wheels (1.7kg) plus an ISM saddle - which is heavy but I really get on with it and prime top tube storage. I suppose this isn’t bad after all, just got to decide on the mounts for new year unless I go for a new rig altogether
