Why are some athletes better than others?

i train with two other guys, and from our training sessions, we seem to be pretty evenly matched. we all have strengths and weaknesses in the three disciplines, but on the whole we should be pretty competitive with each other in races as we train for the same events (IM and 1/2 IM). the thing is, we aren’t. one of the trio is way back, but he shouldn’t be as he buries us all the time on the training track. any ideas? i mean we are talking big differences, like over an hour in IM.

there could be several reasons for this. the first thing that comes to mind is this guy who “buries you all the time on the training track” might be doing his workouts at more of a race pace effort and working much harder than you two. so what you see (at the track) is what you get (at the race).

i run with some people who are just like this. they are going so hard all the time, they never seem to have that “extra gear” come race day. i don’t think they give themselves enough rest. every workout is a race to them and they burn themselves up.
