Why 2 swim caps?

Why are all the Oly guys wearing 2 swim caps?

According to the Canadian announcers, the goggle strap causes drag (1 or 2%)(I can’t remember which).

I was told it was to get a better seal on the cap. The new silicone caps aren’t sticky like the latex ones. So you put the sticky one under it to hold it in place better.

Almost every swimmer that I’ve seen has their goggle straps under their first cap, not their second. I would guess that the 1st cap has a lot of wrinkles in it and the second cap smooths them out more and therefore reducing drag.

The comment was made yeasterday when Phelps won his race and was taking off his cap(s). His goggles were between the two caps he was wearing.

That’s pretty standard to do. We were doing that 15 years ago when i was in HS and I’m sure they where long before that too. You don’t need two caps to do it.

I just watched the 200. His straps were beneath both. … Interesting, the womens 100 fly, the straps were all on the outside.

I am so wearing two caps tomorrow morning at workout…oh yea, and my new lasar suit. How ya like me now Tanya?

Wearing 2 caps squeezes their head, making their heads smaller and therefore reducing surface area and drag.

The ladies for the most part don’t wear their straps inside their caps because of all that hair they have.

HUH! Why mock me? I was just responding to a question. I am at loss to your response! Tonya? As in Harding? ???I do not get it

Kenny,
Sorry about that, yours was just the last post I read and, by mere fate, the one I hit reply to. Wasn’t responding to anything you said specifically. In fact, I was wonder the same thing about the caps! It was more a mocking of myself as a fully admittant tri-geek giving triathletes a bad name everywhere. I just have this visual of swimmers around the globe rushing off to get their double cap/goggle set up in place (remember breathe-rite nose strips?). Rest easy my friend.
And Tanya (ex college stud) leads my lane and no matter how much I try, she’s always that little bit faster…also a long time ST lurker.

Sweet! Thanks my friend, I am going to sleep. Thanks for the reply and have a good night. Have a great day and looking forward to your future posts! Kenney

Actually I always wear my goggles inside my cap and can’t figure out my most triathletes don’t. And I never started doing it for the drag reason because at the time I started I certainly wasn’t swimming fast enough to create any drag. I wear my goggles inside the cap so that they don’t get swept off by stray limbs during a race. It happened to a friend of mine at Embrunman a few years back. Embrunman starts before dawn so you are swimming in the dark. After 10 mins a hand swept his goggles off! He stopped and felt about in the water and very, very luckily, in the dark, his hand felt them in the water and he managed to recover them. So since then, Goggle under the cap!
