i figure its off season so we might as well talk about other stuff Im always curious as to how triathletes think, plus ive read some new books and listened to some new music based on these posts…
ok, if you could put a band together who would be in it? (ie. whos the greatest drummer, guitarist, bass player, etc…)
i’ll take a more modern spin on things, but only for the sake of argument (because there’s no way that any of these guys could measure up to the generation that preceded them)
vocals: thom york (radiohead)
guitar: mike einziger (incubus) and rivers cuomo (weezer)
drums: dave grohl (nirvana / foo fighters)
bass: flea (red hot chili peppers)
songwriting: jeff tweedy (wilco), isaac brock (modest mouse), conrad keely (and you will know us by the trail of dead), thom york (radiohead), kurt cobain (nirvana), jack black (tenacious d), etc…
backup eye-candy, er, singers: britney spears, mandy moore, liz phair, beyonce knowles, NOT christina aguilera
Bass: Flea (Lemmy is a close second just because he pounds the shit out of his instrument)
Drums: Neil Peart
Brass, when necessary: The Memphis Horns
Piano/Keyboard, when necessary: Jellyroll Morton
Backup wailers: Etta James and Momma Cass(the talent), Beyonce, Christina A., and Sheila E. (the gratuitous T&A, hint: their mikes aren’t plugged in!)
Neil and Flea’s slick bottom lines would leave all sorts of room for the giant sounds of Robert, Stevie, and Jellyroll to rage forth. The Horns would slick things down perfectly if anyone got too out of line. I can just hear Stevie Ray slicing through Flea’s dippy-do bass lines with some Hendrix/Al King derived riff from hell (or outerspace, you decide), while Robert sits back waiting for his chance to belt out some hormone’s-a-ragin’ sex rap with Momma and Etta talkin back on the down beat.
This ain’t yo daddy’s “Sweet Home Chicago” jam session!
Not that I am knocking your preferences but c’mon? Where is the intensity in Yanni?
I know it would be cowardly to critique without posting my own, and I do fully realize that my pics are a bit, ummmm, eccentric. Disclaimer: You didn’t specify if this list is limited to currently living artists, so I will avoid past greats like Jimmy Hendrix. Also, these musicians would sound terrible together, so this isn’t a suggestion for a ‘supergroup’ just a list of ‘my greatests’:
Vocals - Henry Rollins and Liz Phair (with Diamond Dave a close third (how can you not smile when you think of him?) Shakira also deservers a mention.
Guitars - Neil Young, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Slash
Bass - Bootsy Collins
Drums - Hell, does it matter? Just kidding…Neil Peart and Mickey Hart
Thanks for the distraction! Now I can get back to obsessing about training while it is freezing raining outside and I am NOT riding my new bike…
Not bad, but…
vocals: Geoff Tate, honarable mention Jon Bon Jovi
guitars: Ed VH, honorable mention to Angus Young and Randy Rhoads
bass: Sheehan
keys: who cares
drums: Neil Peart, but my fave, and honarable metion, is Alex VH.
stl_triness…i knew somebody would question yannis drummer, especially with the other folks i listed, but i say check him out before you criticize it. trust me on this one. i went to a yanni concert with the wife (ok, 3 of em) and his drummer is simply mindblowing. i will admit that yanni is a smart guy, he surrounds himself with musicians that are way above his level, in the same light as Sting does…even though yanni plays the piano with one finger
standard drummers of note such as neil peart and mike portnoy of dream theater are awesome (ive seen each of em in concert 5 times) but charlie adams blows em away. its just one of those things you wouldnt expect but is a pleasant surprise. you gotta see it to believe it. (think his site is charlieadams.net, hes got his own solo projects) dream theater are as much a visual band as an aural band. theyre amazing to watch live. theyre as good live as on albums.
i get into huge music discussions (er…fights, most starts with my coworkers saying that all music is supposed to have lyrics and dream theater/steve morse/vai, etc are just noise, or me saying that the beatles and the Dead are pure and utter crap, but hey, to each his own) with coworkers and one thing ive learned is that its all subjective. everybodys opinion is right and wrong at the same time. the other thing is that there are several types of musicians, dream theather are masters of their instruments where as a stevie ray vaughn or jimi hendrix are better “musicians”, in the light that they can make their instrument sing, even though neither knew how to read music or really knew what they were doing from a technical standpoint. (not criticizing, i like em both and have seen SRV in concert and have all of hendrix’s CDs but you have to take each for what theyre worth…only opening act i ever saw get an encore)
OK, I’ll throw in Roy Buchanan on the guitar, Jimmy Smith on the organ, Keith Moon banging away on anything he can (could) reach, Karl Wallinger to sing with Chrissie Hynde.
The greatest collection of musicians and songwriters has already been collected into a single band. Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, and Paul Bostaph
