Who's in Boulder?

I’m making the leap in a few months. I’m finishing up a 7 year stint in the Air Force and moving my small family out to Boulder for school and the lifestyle. My wife and I are 30ish and we have a 4yr old daughter. I’d like to surround them with people that live a healthy, active lifestyle and enjoy life for the adventures.

I’d like to find a few people here and meet up for some training and area familiarization. Anyone interested?

Luce,

Great decision! We have so many people in Boulder that are after the same things as you and your family are. I would suggest joining a tri club right away. With Boulder Tri Club, Fast Forward, Rocky Mountain Tri Club all available you will quickly plug in right away. Most of these clubs race the Boulder Tri Series as well. There is still space in the Boulder Sprint and Boulder Peak.

I know for sure Boulder Tri Club and Fast Forward both have very active group rides and runs that you should jump in on and see if you like the groups. Colorado Multisport is our local tri shop and they also have a lot of people there you can connect with.

Make sure you let me know if you need anything as you and your family adjust to Boulder. Welcome!

Amazing! Thanks Dave. We are more than excited to make the change. And a change it will be. I’m originally from TX, wife’s from GA, but we’ve spent the last 6 or so years in NorCal. So, never lived at altitude and never in snow. It’s going to be a shock, but we couldn’t be more ready.

It’s a fantastic area for outdoors stuff. After all my travelling it is the city I keep going back to. Finding others to train with is ridiculous easy as they are all over. I’ll be there this summer and can introduce you to some of the people I train with. You will love it.

Also, if you need to get your bike worked on, take it to Daimo at The Service Course. He’s not only the best and the fastest (1 day turnaround max), but his prices are way better than any of the bike shops. Boulder can be an expensive town if you don’t know where or when to go (i.e. happy hours for food and beer!).

I’d like to say that the snow isn’t that bad… but it’s been bad the last few weeks. Normally, you can ride outside without getting wet after about two days. As a triathlete, you have the option of replacing a bike with a run or swim, however, so it’s not a big deal. No schedule is set in stone.

Backing up what Dave says, the Boulder Tri Club and FastForward are both full of awesome people and good times. As he (shamelessly? ) mentioned, the Boulder Tri Series is more or less a must-do at some point in your tri career.

As for living, depending on your financial situation, Boulder Proper can be a relatively expensive place to live. Central Boulder, near the university, is pretty steep due to the college kids spending their parents’ money. North Boulder is a little better, but Gunbarrel (10 min NE) or Louisville (10 min SE) are nice communities with good schools. They’re probably not as good as Fairview High or Boulder High, but your daughter isn’t ready for high school yet.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, we’ve definitely noticed the price differences. We’re actually thinking of going south, Broomfield area. My wife is pursuing a nursing degree and it seems like being closer to Denver gives us more opportunities for jobs. Am i thinking correcty or is north better for any reason?

+1 for broomfield - that’s where I am. Lots of great trails, good pool, Masters group, good bike rides, close to boulder and denver, etc. I haven’t found any local tri teams, but I train mostly early morning hours anyway due to 3.5 year and 6 month old kids. And you can buy my house! PM me if you want more info about the area or just want someone to train with.

Lafayette and Louisville (pronounced Louis-ville) are also great areas and a bit less expensive than Boulder but a great place for families.

My absolute favorite running store in the country is at 28th and Pearl - Boulder Running Company.

Very excited for you! You’ll love it! I’m moving there in September so I’m not far behind.
