when you got interested in triathlon who was your go to guy/girl and why? and maybe who didnt you like?
for me it was Mike Pigg and i just for whatever reason followed all his races and enjoyed his dominance on the bike and how fast he climbed “the beast”… i had a dislike for Greg Welch, i dont know why though…
no triathlete sparked my reason to begin the sport. It was the fact that I wasn’t going to be around organized (college) athletics anymore so I have to do something to keep myself motivated.
A little bit ashamed now, but when I was a kid (not too long ago;) )
Jürgen Zäck always was my favorite athlete, shame he ended his career like he did.

Tim DeBoom, hands down. Saw him running down the Energy Lab in 2002 to “Space for the Papa” by Jeff Beck on NBC. I was 230 lbs. and had never done a triathlon but knew I had to get there and do it one day. Last year when I finally got there on my first day at the Kona Aquatic Center, he was in the lane right next to me. I told him that story, it was very surreal.
I can’t wait to see him back on the podium this year.
I got into the sport in the '80’s when it was the big four: Scott Tinley, Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Scott Molina.
Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to meet each of these fellows in person, as a fan. They were each excellent examples, sportsmen and role models for me in my early 20’s. Those four men are part of the reason I stayed in the sport so long, and still are. They have a gentlemen’s perspective and they are competitors. They knew what it was to work and they respected each other. Each of those four are different and in interesting ways. Having read as much as I could about each and their lives and their approach to the sport the amalgam of their personalities has been a lofty example to aspire to.
All fine characters who shaped this sport- and me- for the better. I’m thankful for their contributions and inspiration.
Watched Rob Mackle at the Lifetime Fittness back in 90 or 91 (I think it was called the US swim and Fittness back then). Didn’t really know anyone in the sport but saw this crazy fit guy come out of the water and just destroy the bike and was incredibly impressed. He actually got run down by Molina but as a bigger athlete myself, Mackle was who impressed me.

that is a cool story… what did he say when he heard the story?
My brother in law got me interested in triathlons a few years ago, but since i have really gotten into the sport, i really like following Kieran Doe. He is young an amazing swimmer and he is good at the other disciplines too… and he ran almost the whole marathon at IMAZ barefoot!!! because of plantar fasciitis. That is amazing. and he has a full head of long dread locks and he is still that fast!!! haha. Jordan Rapp is another one i like to follow, chris Lieto, Potts, Kemper, Bree wee is another one too and of course Wellington
