I was at the bike shop and the guy said it’s suggested to replace bike insoles about every 1,000 miles. I’ve never heard that before and I bought some. I didn’t buy them because of what he said. I bought them because I’ve had some foot issues and decided to try them out. I bought some BG by specialized. Do people replace these on a regular basis? Seems you don’t need to replace your bike shoes like running shoes, but I’ve never thought about the insoles. They had about 10,000 miles on them so I figured it wouldn’t hurt
When you pee in something it’s a good idea to replace it. All jokes aside, I’ve never heard of replacing bike shoe insoles, but if they’re worn out it makes sense. It’s cheaper than new shoes.
I bought insoles b/c my feet cramp w/o arch support and my tri shoes had none (Exustar?). Plus I seem to have low volume feet and there was too much space in the shoes. I was wondering lately if I needed more filler - maybe shoes stretched or supports are less supportive?
My road shoes though came with great contoured support. Love them (Specialized) except they are too hot to wear (not enough ventillation).
I used the specialized insoles in the pair of shoes i just replaced. They’re really sturdy, don’t think they’d ever need replacement really…
Yes. They are only made of foam. Think of them as the tires for your feet.
As a Fitter, the conditions of insoles give me an indication of how that rider is standing on their shoes; excessive pressure points, clutching toes, etc. Oftentimes result of poor cleat alignment.
1,000 miles may be too soon, it may be not soon enough, to replace. Depends on rider weight, weather conditions, and possibly…however acidic your urine is. Oils, salts, etc.
When I was training heavily on the road, doing 150miles a week, I’d replace my Specialized Blue insoles every 8 months. Same as my tires, come to think of it. Although the old tires would be used on the trainer in the winter…
I have been using 2 pairs of Peterson Powerbeds in two sets of shoes (road and Tri) for over 20,000 miles. They offer a rigid plastic structure from the heel to the front of the arch. Then a flexible fabric from there to the end of your toes. It is very supportive of the arch. I needed more pairs mtb shoes. I can’t find them. I have been using blue Superfeet insoles with great success.
I replace the factory insoles with running shoe insoles. The extra arch support feels really good to my feet.
I’ve been cycling for 30 years. Over the course of 4 pairs of shoes…insoles have never been changed.
I’m still alive.
I just replaced a pair of SuperFeet insoles that had over 30,000 miles on them. (Actually, I’m not replacing them but will continue to use them in what are now my rain shoes).
It is possible I pushed them too far but they still look and feel OK and new ones did not feel different. They were definitely were still in 100% new condition at 1000 miles.
The crappy basic insoles that come with cycling shoes would never have held up anywhere near that long though.
I have actually heard that you should replace your insoles every few months else your feet just get lazy and you want to keep your feet muscles guessing with different types.
What I usually do is just buy cheap ones every month like these from here and so I dont go bankrupt.
I replaced the stock insoles from my Specialized S-Works Trivents with the red Specialized BG insoles. They seem to feel better after a couple of rides.
I was having some issues with my left foot going numb after about 40 miles, and it was recommended to swap out the insoles for something with a little more arch support. Put in a set of Superfeet Carbon and haven’t had any issues since.
I can imagine that bike insoles wear out eventually, but 1000 miles sounds both arbitrary and ridiculous. I have some custom insoles on my road shoes, done about 5000 miles and have no intention of replacing them soon as they were quite expensive (bought them as a bit of a treat to myself at the same time as a RETUL fit and some new shoes). Have more like 15,000 miles on the MTB shoes I use for commuting, and no issues.

i replace mine about every 7-10 thousand miles, ymmv. I bought my first pair in December 2012 and used them until April 2014. I was getting knee pain and wasn’t quite sure what the cause was. The material of the insole apparently compressed a bit and was no longer providing the right level of support.
Thinking about replacing mine simply on the grounds that they’re really, really starting to smell bad.
