Who remembers the Zack, Stadler, Palomar Climb

a friend recently sent me this link…It was one of the coolest events in multi-sport in a while.

Anyone interested in taking part in another??? http://slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/features/palomar.html

there was this thread last month started by plumb. i do not think dates have been picked.

Triyoda thinks he is a hill climbing stud. We should take up a collection at Ironman LP and fly him out to Palomar to rid with some real studs.

I thought there was also a Zack vs Spencer Smith Palomar climb?

Set a date and let’s give it a spin.

Nothing to do with Zack and Spencer but there is a Palomar ride this weekend. I’m not going but a friend of mine is and sent me this link. http://www.cyclysmadventures.com/palomar.htm It should be good and hot this weekend.

This is the type of talk that smackdown legends are made of:

“NOBODY breaks an hour up Palomar. You’re an instant legend if you do. I believe Hegg has done it. I’ve heard allen has gone fifty-seven at one point, out of many, many climbs up the thing. I heard a rumor once that Kenny Souza went fifty-four minutes, but I recently asked him about it and he said he’d never gotten under an hour. I also heard that Rominger once did it in forty-nine minutes, but I flat-out don’t believe this apocryphy, which I classify no more than urban myth.”

Slowman…if Mark Allen went 57, I’d say there is a strong chance that Mr. Rominger went sub 50 :-). Rominger just had the misfortune to be the strongest rider when Indurain was at his peak. In 1994, the guy went 55.291km kph for the world hour record at sea level in Bordeaux with a round tubed Colnago with no tricked out Superman position. This was around 2 weeks after he went 53 .832 in the same velodrome. How studly is that. I’d say that sub 50 might actually have happened!

Dev

Allen actually went 56.43 km in an hour, but it was in training!

“I’d say that sub 50 might actually have happened!”

he certainly was capable of it. but you have to understand that parallel universe in which san diego exists. lots of things are allegedly the case down there that turn out to have no basis in fact.

Make it Sunday, September 18th and I will do support and take photos. I’ll be down there for work and to run the 1/2 marathon on Camp P.

LOL!!! SO, so true!!!

I just got out of a parallel universe where I was talking about packet data flows between Digital Signal Processors and Switching Chips in wireless base stations. For some reason, the San Diego parallel universe of endurance sport machismo sounds much less abstract :-).

I’d love to do this Palomar Climb one day. Sounds like a blast.

4000 feet per hour is totally studly. Anything above 3300 ft per hour (1000m per hour) is lung and leg burning in a big way. I think Marc Becker has all the stats on vertical meters per hour.

To put this whole discussion in perspective, Iban Mayo when he set the Ventoux World Record went over 1609 m/5280 ft of elevation gain in 21,5 km/13,4 mi with max gradient 11-12% over short stretches in 55 min)!

http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2004/jun04/dauphinelibere04/?id=results/stage4

I’d say if Mayo could do Ventoux in 55 min, then Rominger was certainly capable of sub 50 on Palomar. Of course, he may have never done it.

I think while you guys are at it, you should invite Tyler Hamilton, Roberto Hera, Francesco Mancebo, Ivan Basso and Jan. They have no other races they can do, so they may as well square off at Palomar

Do you think they will show up for a free box of energy gels and a Kuota hat?!?!?

I think you need to time it on the same day as the TdF Alp D’Huez Stage. Then you need to set up live velonew, OLN, Eurosport and Cycling New Coverage. Finally, you need to get a VC fund on Sand Hill Road in Palo Alto to invest in “Juiced out Vertical Productions”. Then invite the aforementioned boys and you have a world class event!

This Palomar event could be the main event that everyone was expecting this July in the Alps, instead you’ll have it on the left coast. These guys are all primed, tapered and fit. Rominger’s phantom 49.59 would certainly be doomed. Make sure you bring the Barry Bonds cream to the start line too :-). Maybe you can even lure Lance out of retirement by making it a cancer fundraiser.

that weekend looks good, except that the Sunday is the 17th of September. I’m pretty tired and bored of the races, paying $100+ entry fees, traveling, getting up at 4:30am etc etc. I much prefer doing these kind of events now, no awards, no entry fees, just show up and go hard.

Sunday September 17th is far enough away that people can set their calenders for something like this and make arrangements. Let’s do it. No excuses (unless they are mine), you either show and up do it, show up and crew, or don’t show up. Who’s in?

Yeah, 17th.

Saturday, September 16th:
Heartbreak Ridge 1/2

Sunday, September 17th:
Palomar Hill Climb

I’ll make a late return flight for Sunday.

I couldn’t even win the Whiteface Hillclimb (real one), so I don’t need to fly to Cali to get beat down. Maybe it was because I was riding a 23 pound steel bike, no chance it was due to having a weak engine;)

Triyoda, we should fly you out to give Jurgen Zack, Spencer Smith, Norman Stadler, Mike Plumb and Paul Thomas a sound thrashing. I am sure we can even get you a 16.5 lb tricked out carbon fiber ride so you have no excuses :-). Maybe if you are good, KestrelKerri will cook you dinner to fatten you up so you are at the legal UCI weight limit for this event.

See the Sept 17th post
