As we come to the end of the decade, who are your endurance athletes of the decade? Lance, Craig, Chrissie, Michael Phelps, Sammy Wanjuri, Deena Kastor, Dean Karnazes or someone else?
Swimming, Running, Biking more? Who you would pick and why?

I just threw up a little in my mouth…
Yeah, your list looks like something my kids get from school - pick which one doesn’t belong …
Sheila T for her excellence in so many different disciplines.
So who is it? Not who it isn’t? Come on boys, enough ridicule, add something constructive to the conversation, or we send you to the principals office:)
Good call. Would that be over everyone, or female?

I need a bucket!!!

Paulo,
That’ all you can add. Really. That’s the limit of what you got.
You are awesome.
You would think that a guy who sells himself as a coach, would be able to have more of an expert input that “I need a bucket” over and over again. Your athletes must cherish that sort of witty banter, from an expert like you. You should take that input to the next level, call John Duke, you should have a column, maybe a show! We could call it “The Why Do People pay this guy show?”
Lance or Geb
.
For Tri - Matt Reed, Macca (especially for the ITU to LC shift), Greg Bennett, Chrissie, Stoltz, Jason Lester, Jonas Colting
For Swim - Phelps, Thorpe, Natalie Coughlin
For Bike - Jens, Cavendish, Lance (for what he brings to the table), everyone that is a lead cyclist in the Tour 3+ years
For Run - Meb, Dean (he generated a lot of attention regardless of all else), Oprah, P Diddy (couldn’t resist)
.
Simon Whitfield - first gold medal won in the sport of triathlon at Sydney. An incredible rebound after a disappointing race in Athens to take a remarkable silver in Beijing. Also #2 all time and #1 (or tied with Gomez now) on all time list of WC wins
Emma Snowsill - 3x world champ and a stunning performance to win gold in Beijing.
That’s within triathlon. Lance, Phelps, Geb, Thorpe, Danish LWT4-, Matthew Pinsent (4 consecutive Olympic Golds & 10 World Champs), Hicham El Guerrouj all get outstanding long term performances within the decade. Don’t forget that 2000-2005 is just as long as 2005-2010.
For singular performances (or one year of performances) of the decade - Brownlee, Wanjiru, and numerous others.

I can only assume this post is meant to be a joke?
If not, this post and thread in general could be exhibit A for every single-sport athlete that complains that triathletes are COMPLETELY clueless about the respective sports which make up triathlon. I mean jesus christ, Phelps is an incredible athlete, but do you people realize that the huge majority of the events he competes in take <2mins? If that qualifies as an endurance athlete, maybe we throw Wariner in the mix as well??
Hey dude—losing beaucoup respect for you–don’t be such a downer!

While I agree some of those names are ridiculous (Jens Voight or Jonas Colting as athletes of the decade? Really?), apparently phelps is an endurance athlete. I read somewhere that in track starting at 800m it’s an endurance event and that is well under 2 mins

This is an easy one.
Ole Einar Bjørndalen
6x Overall Biathlon World Cup Champion
6x Runner-up World Cup
1x Third World Cup (it was an “off year” for Ole)
(13 years of placing top 3 for the season).
Total podium finishes…162 (biathlon)
3 podium finishes in cross-country (not his individual sport)
6 Olympic Gold Medals
4 Olympic Silver Medals
1 Olympic Bronze
Add to this…
14x World Champion
11x Silver
9 x Bronze.
Nobody (not Lance, or Macca or Chrissy, Dave Scott or Mark Allen even in their prime), can touch this.
These do not even include Ole’s junior racing statistics.
You could argue that Phelps and Thorpe are endurance athletes, but Natalie Couglin is a PURE sprinter. She competes in mostly 100 meter events and swims UP to the 200.
I am going to say Floyd Landis, for owning up to his mistakes and revealing what actually goes on in the ProTour.
