I have to apologise as I cannot remember the “moniker” of the guy who I arranged to run with when I come to Michigan.I want to say it was Robert but am probably wrong. PM me if you are in town next week, as I will be over for late Monday through to Thursday, it would be great to have a training partner, especially as the guys suggest that safety in numbers might be in order!
Actually my brother goes there quite regularly for business trips since his company is involved in automobile design and they do some work for the Big Three. Problem is he’s not a runner so there’s no point in trying to link him up with you.
will you be in Detroit? I live in Lansing so if you’re there we could go for a bike ride or a swim.
Let me know!
Dan, I have no idea where LAnsing is, but it would be good to link up. I believe that Tuesday pm and Wednesday are the test rides, but I am taking my run, and swim kit just in case I can find a pool close to the Village Inn in Dearborn.
Stay tuned.
Where are you staying? Unless you are actually staying in a bad part of Detroit, you probably don’t need a bodyguard when you are running.
Tell us where you will be staying (city, hotel) and we’ll link you up with those nearby.
I’m staying at the Village Inn in Dearborn, which Tom D informs me is good & according to Google maps is just down the block from the centre of cycling USA!
Thanks Lew, that would be good. A nice way to while away those non-fitting hours without filing up in food shops!
My in-laws live about a mile away, on the other side of Telegraph Road, and that area is fine for go running at any time of day or night. I think that there are one or two bad places in Dearborn or Dearborn Heights, but I’m not sure if you are near any of them.
We live about 25 minues away, and I don’t know if you’ll have a car, but I’ll be running at 6:15 AM or so on Tuesday and Thursday morning next week. Doubt that’s much help as it won’t be particularly fast even for me, however, and you’re a relatively fast runner, aren’t you?
relatively fast runner, aren’t you?
Relatively fast, as in quicker than my mum! Thanks for the kind invite however, I shan’t have a car but will have jet-lag!
A wonderful invite. Come run in the dark on a nice firm cement sidewalk, on a no doubt dreary morning in Michigan, with a great view of cars whose headlights just about blind you from time to time. How could anyone pass that up?
When you put it like that, how indeed '-)
.
It does make the racing easier.
You got that right, I live on the coastline here and I have no problems running in strong headwinds and since it’s hilly I hate flat bike courses!
The two best points of contact for you would be (a) Tom Demerly (which you already knew) and (b) the Ford Area Swim and Triathlon team - F.A.S.T. The website for the latter is http://swimfasttrifast.com/
jk_allen13,
If you are a faster rather than slower runner, just walk across the street from your hotel and use the Ford vehicles on the Ford Motor Company Test Track for your training partner. I’m certain you can get a good workout at that pace! At least better than your mum.
You will be right across the street just east from Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum the combo is now known as the Henry Ford. There are lots of safe places/routes to run there. Early in the morning and later in the evening are the best times, low traffic volume and low to zero numbers of visitors.
Best wishes for a great visit.
Thanks Lew for the information, I will try the FAST site for more detail.
Thanks Ben, what is Greefield Village? I saw it in the attracctions of Dearborn but couldn’t see what it was.
Michigan sucks, Tom needs to move his shop to a state with a real university…like ohio ![]()
.
Greenfield Village is a small village that has a lot of historical houses, workshops. It’s worth going to see if you are in the area. You will take a nice leisurely stroll through it and be able to read about everything there. Henry Ford Museum is pretty cool too. A lot of local history is there plus activities for kids.
