seriously. Some nut jobs in the city of Montreal suddenly decided to paint a bike path lane on Prince Arthur next door to the local university/college McGill. Having just moved to the area, (and having gone to McGill) I have NO idea why they did this. Its a narrow road that intersects MANY one way streets and man were people pissed during rush hour yesterday.
Drivers were ignoring the lines, bikers were jockeying position in the bike lane, (we even had a scooter in there -lardo) and people were turning into the lane constantly. Talk about DUMB idea.
Now if anyone had half a brain, they would have instituted this on Milton, the one way street the leads TO the school (not away). I admit, everytime I’m on that street, bikers on the left, right, in between cars AND you have joker kids riding the opposite direction.
And one last thing, what is the point of painting two bicycles on a normal road (no bike lane) indicating the “flow of traffic”? Seriously, its a bike with two arrows on top of it saying which way the road goes. They did that on my street! morons. Municipal elections - do I vote for dumb or dumber?
I’m convinced that nobody who has any cycling sense whatsoever designs these things and they do so without soliciting any input whatsoever from those who will actually use them.
I live in the Upstate of South Carolina. We have this little town that likes to claim how cycling-friendly it is. They’ve built these “bike paths” all around. Sometimes they’re alongside the road and full of gravel and glass. Sometimes they’re built like sidewalks and they’re piled full of people’s trash and populated with walkers, skateboarders, people pushing baby strollers, etc. On one of the classic sections, the path runs alongside the road on a screaming descent and the path abruptly ends at the very bottom where there’s a train bridge trestle standing like a wall in the lane.
I live near a major highway that’s being widened and they’ve made quite a big deal about the fact that it’ll have a bike lane included. Well, they’ve built a bike lane where the road is on land. Everywhere there’s a bridge, the lane is gone … and there are about 3 bridges per mile. It’s ridiculous.
And the law in South Carolina says that, where there’s a bike lane, you’re required to use it. I hope they stop building bike lanes around here. They’re going to get somebody killed, for sure.
