Who coaches the top pros?

I know a certain angry (and very dear to my heart) poster coaches Jonnyo, but who coaches the other guys? Macca, Statdler, Ficker, Badmann, etc… I assume it’s not Carmichael Training Systems or the Virtual Coach at TrainingPeaks.com

And related…

If you were a neo/wannabe pro, how would you try to get coached by? How would that be paid for, your day job? Sponsors?

CTS’ Nick White coaches Craig Alexander.

A lot of the pros are coached by a person or a committee, or have a group of people to rely on for training. Macca has Nick, Baddmann has her life partner(can’t remember his name), Belinda and Hillary and Chrissy and a bunch of others are coached by Brett Sutton(Team TBB). So, no most pros are not coached by these big groups(the ones you mentioned, etc…) Having said that, most of the people that have a coach like these have a very close interpersonal relationship, and not some internet thing. That for me would be the distinction, if you were a pro, or thinking of going pro, finding a coach that has time for you personally, or as the trend seems to be going, to a team environment, would be the key. How to pay for that? Good question. For me, it would be my day job paying for my coach obviously.

2007 IM World Champion - Chris McCormack…Coached by Chris Mcormack
2006 IM World Champion - Norman Stadler…Coached by Norman Stadler
2005 IM World Champion - Faris Al Sultan…Coached by Faris Al Sultan

zach… you might have to rethink this,… 2 of these athlete you mention are working with coaches…

Andy Potts coached by Mike Doane
Simon Whitfield coached by Joel Filliol

Chris and… ?

Any friday daytime people have other input into this?

I’m asking because a friend of mine has it in his heart to be an olympian/pro triathlete and has no idea what he’s doing, really, and I’m just curious as to how one would go about getting there.

It makes a lot of sense to me that they’d have coaches that worked with them closely and did things like watch workouts, meet with/talk to their athletes regularly…

I doubt most top pro’s have coaches that micro-manage their training that much.

I highly recommend my coach, Marc Becker of ironguides.net.

I don’t believe any of them follow blindly off of a program. More than likely they have become students of the sport and ‘work with’ a coach that they trust and knows them personally. I think the whole internet coaching has gotten a bit impersonal. If I were a wannabe pro, I would find someone with the best credentials that I respected personally and pay the with my day job money. Then, if I were to get some results, I would allow them to use my name as a promotion of there super duper coaching skills but in return I would get to stop paying from my day job.
By the way… what ever happened to coaching for the love of the sport and giving back. The whole circle of life thing. Just a thought.

Working on it.

Paulo Sousa.

Paulo Sousa.
i can’t believe it took so long for that answer

The other thing to remember is that there are pro’s who have coaches / advisors and don’t advertise it for various reasons. (e.g. “I’m planning on a career in coaching once I quit racing and I want to look like I’ve succeeded on my own.”)

As someone else mentioned, though, “coaching by committee” seems to be becoming a bit more popular. I work as a consultant with several athletes who have a primary coach who wants scientific input.

But all that aside, how good is your friend? Generally speaking, good athletes start to rise towards the top fairly early and without much coaching due to superior physiology. The next step from there may or may not require professional assistance.

I know the Faris one is wrong.
