I was there two weeks ago and it was in the low-60’s.
My 13 year old son swam in there and Lost Lake (which was even cooler) so quit being a bunch of pussies.

Can your kid swim a relay for me?
72.5 water with a heatwave approaching: DO NOT WEAR A WETSUIT.
72.5 water with a heatwave approaching: DO NOT WEAR A WETSUIT.
Huh?
72.5 is too warm to wear a wetsuit. Add to that the expected hot temps for the bike and run, and you’ve got a recipe for lots of overheating.
Seriously, if you were out on a boat with friends, would you not jump into the lake to have fun if the water temp was 72.5 and there wasn’t a wetsuit around?
72.5: people wondering if they should put on wetsuits as if the race directors had to go chip ice off the course buoys and chase the puffins and polar bears away from the swim course.

My kids swam in Berg Lake on Mt. Robson. I got in up to my knees before backing out. I think the cold affects them less, or maybe I’m just more smarter.

What the F are you talking about? For almost all (there will be some exceptions) AG’ers it will be faster to swim in a wetsuit, whatever the water temp.
So please don’t ‘shout’ idiotic advice.

Please stop. You’re being ridiculous.

You want to be the only person wearing one, sneaky.
That’s funny! I like it.
Actually, my motives are darker: maybe people will realize that 72.5 won’t mean immediate hypothermia. They won’t trap pee from all the hydrating next to their skin for 70+ minutes. They also won’t be headed out on the bike ride after basting in their own juices for the duration of the swim, and maybe, they’ll actually have a better day long-term than the 1-2 minutes they might have gained in the swim. THEN! These same swimmers can see less of a need to buy or rent a wetsuit for training and races, and the wetsuit companies will fold like cheap tents during a tornado, MWAHAHAHAHA!
To me it really depends on air temps. I don’t like swimming in a wetsuit in 72 degree water. Hell we stopped wearing them in so cal a few weeks ago in the high 60s
If the air temp coming out of the water is in the 60s that’s different than if the air temps are in the 80s. I did Silverman and chose to wear a suit when it was barely wetsuit legal (and I doubt it actually was) but exiting the water it was already 80 so it wasn’t a great decision.
Personally I’m making the call on race day. Speedsuit will cost me maybe 4-5 minutes total if that. But if it’s cool coming out of the water IME I’m not going to experience adverse heat effects especially as I’ll be getting on the bike in wet gear. I expect the first half loop to be very comfortable temp wise
The heat wave is here!
Maximum temperatures near the water will peak in the mid to high twenties each day, while inland temperatures soar into low to mid thirties. Values may increase slightly by the weekend. The forecast temperatures this week are 5 to 10 degrees above average for late July, but temperature records probably will not be broken.

90 plus race day
Fuck me.

He’s not kidding. Must be heat trapped in the passes or maybe the fresh blacktop on sea to sky absorbing and radiating the heat. Heat in Whistler feels really awful especially up those three consecutive climbs returning back to the village.
Yep. I wont be messing around, will be dialing everything back considerably to not collapse on that run
Luckily the first climb back should be around 8:30 ish , second around 10:30 ish. Third will suuuuuuck Especially with a tailwind

Holy schnikes! Looks like it’s going to be a scorcher.
I am just a MOP finisher (not competing for AG awards) so I’ll likely wear the sleeveless wet-suit. I’m a strong swimmer (60-65 min projected finish) but I still find the neoprene to be a huge confidence booster in open water. It looks like morning air temps will only be 65-70 degrees by the time I come out of the water, so will have plenty of time to cool off in a wet tri suit before things get brutal mid-afternoon.
I am very very worried about the heat on laps 2/3 of ride and marathon though. I’m based on cool/breezy SF and the shadeless heat at Chatty 70.3 this year crushed my run split and it was only high 80s F.
