all courses or races aside…what were you using when you rode the fastest?
I’ve split 27.2 on two occasions: last year and back in the mid-'90s
Mid-90s: Front-Open 4 CD with 28 oval spokes, Rear-JDisc (both with Michelin Comps and butyl tubes)
2010: Front-HED J9, Rear-Renn 575 (both with Conti Supersonics and latex tubes)
.
Titanflexr-I love that you quoted the same wheelset I had;

J-disc rear, 28 spoke bladed front Mavic from Performance bike!
Fastest split ever-24.8 mph at the Software Publishing biathlon way back in 1992!
That’s a Nishiki International in it’s 24 pound glory!
The fastest TT I did was on Ritchey carbon clinchers (46mm), averaging 24.49 mph over 10.4 miles. Wheels were on the first generation Scott Plasma (not in this pic)

Last summer 27.4 average on a Planet X Stealth with a H3 upfront and a Renn 575 using Bontrager Aerowing 19’s and Michelin latex tubes.
It being my first year last year, went a 1:04:48 40k (with a crash in the middle) on Shimano WH-500s. Have just recently purchased a SRAM S60 front and PTap rear with disc cover, so hopefully I can stay upright and reap some more aero benefits.
Very old trispoke tubular, and a very old ZIPP disk tubular. Still use them, haven’t seen a compelling reason to upgrade.
Styrrell
old style hed jet 90 front with 19mm bontrager aerowing
cheap $100 rear wheel with a disc cover on the rear
something like 26.8mph for 8 mile hilly out and back TT

.
808 clinchers with a cover on the rear.
Zipp 1080 w/ tangente tubular front; Zipp 900 with for the rear. 12.5 mile at 27.1 mph - loop around Presque Isle, PA
Zipp 1080 w/ tangente tubular front; Zipp 900 with for the rear. 12.5 mile at 27.1 mph - loop around Presque Isle, PA
nice, that is proper fast =)
Renn 575 disc on the rear. Zipp 404 on the front (no dimples). Both clinchers. 650c. Vittoria open corsa evo CX rubber and latex tubes.
One of my best bike bike splits ever was at IMC back in 1991 I believe - rode a 4:58 on a set of Mavic Mach2 CD’s
Found a pic here!

Still have these wheels. Might dust them off this summer and glue some new rubber on them.
YMMV!
Hed Jet 6/9 FR combo with Conti 4000 tires. I like it even better than my Hed 3c wheelset, especially for long races. I’ve heard that I should try the Jet6 on the front and the Hed3c on the rear, maybe at one of this year’s TT’s.

Training my ass off, recovering, eating right… oh… what wheels? Some stock piece of crap wheels.
I agree. my best PR was in a season where I trained the hardest.
You are the engine and no race wheels are going to give you that much of an advantage without the training to make them turn.
I just posted a WTB ad for some race wheels, then- I read this.
It made me remember that my fastest race was on some Real Design supersonic carbon rims I got used for under $300. The front wheel was good for about 10 miles before the spokes would start coming loose. I lock tighted the nipples before each race and after the half IM, the front wheel was so wacked! haha
Good times.
I used a Renn 575 disc and a Specialized tri spoke . My 10 mile TT(basically flat) at 23:10 and a 2:25 for Pacific Crest 1/2 IM which has a 58 mile bike distance.
Disk rear 60 mm front.
Zipp 1080 w/ tangente tubular front; Zipp 900 with for the rear. 12.5 mile at 27.1 mph - loop around Presque Isle, PA

Thanks; its fast but never fast enough for first place. They have the event 3 time a year; I’m placed in the top 10 each year, but can never get better than third.
For example these are the time from the summer event last year:
25:20.00 29.6mph25:41.55 29.2mph 26:14.70 28.6mph26:57.70 27.8mph 27:00.60 27.8mph 27:03.55 27.7mph 27:07.70 27.7mph 27:33.30 27.2mph 27:37.20 27.2mph
Looks like I need to do something different to get to 29 mph
Flashpoint FP80’s front and back for my Olympic and HIM PR’s.
