When I did my first HIM last year (and registered for others for this year) there was a particular wetsuit that was mentioned as being illegal. Being in the market for a new (upgraded) wetsuit I was wondering if anyone knew which one it was?
Also…which wetsuit do you all think is the best out there? I have the middle of the line Xterra right now. I like the sleeveless one, but the full sleeved one feels too constricted in the shoulders when swimming. I have read a few articles about finding the right suit for your swim type…I feel like I have pretty decent form if that matters.
The illegal one was probably the 10 mm water rover by de Soto.
As for the best legal one it’s the one that fits your body type and swimming style the best. Then again pros change wetsuit sponsors but their swim times don’t really seem to be affected so maybe there isn’t that big of a difference between different brands.
The Water Rover is the only suit that is officially banned.
The best suit, will be the suit that fits you best without sacrificing any benefits of freedom of shoulder movement.
Every wetsuit is going to fit each person a little bit differently. You need to try some suits on to see what suits fit you the best.
Full sleeve is going to be faster every day of the week. Unless you are swimming in really warm temperatures and worry about over heating, I’d stick with the full sleeve.

Thanks for telling us that, because before you said that, I thought the worst fitting wetsuit was the best. Seriosuly, GTFO with that, everybody knows that and your answer had pretty much nothing to do with the question.
With all due respect, trying to impart some wisdom, rather than providing a useless answer such as “that thing is rad” when referring to the suit that is banned, I believe is the essence of what the OP is seeking.
Sure, most people know that a proper fitting wetsuit is the best one. But honestly, people telling him what suit they love isn’t going to always translate to what suit works best for him. (though I’m sure you know that too) Until I stop seeing people with ill fitting wetsuits, I will continue to recommend this.
