Which to get first: front aero wheel or rear?

I have narrowed down my choice to Hed Jet C2 60 front and Hed Jet C2 90 rear, due to reviews, and most of all, availability where I am from (outside the United States).

However, I am at a quandary: budget says I can only get one wheel at a time, and the other wheel maybe 4-6 months down the road. So, which to get first: the front wheel or the rear wheel?

Based on my readings here in ST, the front wheel will have more aero benefit. My concern, however, is handling: I have also read that deep front wheels (not that the 60 is very deep) are easier to handle if the rear wheel is deeper (or a disc).

Pros and cons of which to get first?

Thanks for any advice.

EDIT: Current wheels are the very excellent ROL Race SLs. Paid about $150 shipping for the $600 wheelset (that’s my problem: I would end up paying $100 shipping for Rich’s $100 wheel cover).

I say go with the rear wheel first. It is most likely going to make you bike roll and pedal easier then the stock rear wheel. Plus the front wheel should be cheaper and faster to save up for.

Sounds like you did your research well and you are correct on all counts. Good choice in wheels for an “all around” set. I personally run a Jet90 front and rear disc though.

As to what to get first? Depends on your race schedule I guess, how windy, how much you weigh, what kind of bike handler you are, what your current wheels are, etc. You could always get the Jet C2 60 front and a rear disc cover (as I’m sure you have read about), then the 90 later. Probably the way I would go and that would also give you another rear option.

The C2 60 is a very nice wheel!

In your shoes I’d get the front and a rear disk cover from wheelbuilder.com for whatever you have in the rear right now.

Argh…

Rod, you type too fast, man. :frowning:

Your best bet is to get the front aero wheel and spend $100 for a custom cut disc cover from wheelbuilder.com for the rear you already have.

I wouldn’t go with the front aero wheel by itself as it can be affected more by winds when running a rear stock wheel. The disc is actually more stable than an aero front.

You, on the other hand, can’t type worth a dang.

Yeah, STers type fast, don’t they?

The wheelbuilder disc cover has been an itch I’ve been wanting to get, but shipping it to my country does not justify the cost. But I have read Rich’s wheel covers are just the bomb…

I like the first reply… the rear wheel probably first (if I could get a wheelcover shipped cheaply, I would have gone for the front first). Also, the fact that the front wheel is a tad less expensive makes it easier to save up for later.

Cheers!

Yep. I’ve been called out on that more than once. I tend to shoot off the top of my head at times and I’m not a great typer. But I think he got the general idea.
