Which Pedals? (2)

I am building my new tri-bike and want to see what you guys would recommend for new pedals?

Look Keo Carbon with Cro-Moly spindles… $145
Look Keo Carbon with Ti spindles… $250
Look Keo High Modulus Carbon with Ti spindles… $295
Time RXS Carbon with Cro-Moly spindles… $275
Time RXS Carbon with Ti spindles… $145
Dura-Ace pedals… $150
Ultegra pedals… $80

I would bet that if you dont look down - while you are riding you will not be able to tell one pedal from another.

Very true. I have sets of Looks on 2 of my bikes and a set of Nashbar Look compatible on my race bike and I can’t tell any difference at all. The nashabrs have lasted for years and are just the same weight as the much more expensive Looks.

I can’t speak for anything but 2 of the 3 Keos you mention. And as Chip states, I can’t tell them apart by the feel. I love the large platform, ease of entry and “bulletproof-ness” of the Look pedals. Also, you can go as light as your budget will allow.

i feel like you may have the $ for the TIME pedals wrong…but i have a pair of Time with the Ti spindles and i really like them especially because for races when i clip the shoes in before the race they never pop out if they hit the ground as i run out of transition, unlike my looks. Also a really nice feature are the cleats them-selves because they are not slippery like the looks… although i think i have seen some looks with a bit of rubber on the bottom… but you cant go wrong with any of these pedals

how much float do you want? from what I remember the time pedals allow for a lot more movement than the shimano or the looks

agreed…cro-mo spindles arent going to be more expensive than Ti
.

I think you may want to check out probikekit.com for those Look pedals.

What about the Look Ironman pedals? Not on the list!

IMHO, there’s no reason to go with the Time RXS Carbon with CroMo spindles over the regular Time RXS (either the new RXS “Edge” or “Racer”). No significant savings in weight (claimed 25g difference PER PAIR) and they probably just add a little bit of carbon to the plastic of the pedal body…i.e. no performance difference to speak of, they just cost more and say “carbon”

True enough for all of the Look/Time styles. But I can instantly tell if I swap to Speedplays. My knees prefer the totally free float of the speedplays.

Speedplay was not on the list

I am quite happy with my Look Keo Sprints on my roadie and my Look Keo Carbon/Cro-Moly on my tri bike. Can’t really rell a difference between the two, but when I bought the pedals for my tri bike, I figured I would spend the little bit extra for the ‘nicer’ carbon pedals. Looking back (no pun intended), I would probably just get the Look Keo Sprints for my tri bike.

Touche!

From Look-Look or TIME-TIME, I totally agree.

I’m mostly agnostic on the pedal choice issue, as most experienced customers know what they like, and it’s not worth trying to convince them otherwise. But the stack height issue with TIME pedals is the one thing that when you start swapping systems during a fit session that everyone seems to notice without looking down.

Not everyone automatically finds the lower stack height superior, and it’s only one variable among many – but it really does seem to be the deciding factor for many folks, and really surprises riders who’ve been on Look/Shimano/Speedplay for a long time. It does seem that high cadence riders find it it to be a bigger selling point than those with lower cadences.

May I throw Ritcheys into the mix? Make you stand out a little.

For a totally new experience, try sidemount pedals.
Yes they are pricey for the first bike, but only ~$100 for each bike after that.

I have a couple sets of Look Carbons (CroMo) and Look Sprints. I cannot tell the difference between the two (other than on a digital scale) - they are both excellent. I would save your money and get the Sprints.

I ordered my Look Keo Carbon pedals for a nice price–you can check it out at http://www.totalcycling.com/index.php/product/PD_LOOK_KEO_CARBON.html?action=currency&id=USD.
.

The Time RXS pedals are great - light and low profile. I also prefer the float to other pedals I’ve tried. As mentioned, the RXS Carbons are only a few grams lighter than the standard RXS pedals so I don’t think they are worth the extra. The RXS Carbon Ti, on the other hand, may be worth the extra cash if weight is a premium for you.
