Which Industrial Fan for Trainer Workouts

For those who do interval work/workouts on the trainer, what brand of industrial type fan do you use or recommend? Where did you find it?

Cheers!

I use a basic boxfan- not sure of brand and IT SUCKS! I need to upgrade bc I am drenched when I am only 20 mins in.

My cheap box fan works fine. I think it was 20 bucks

kneejerk reaction would be a recommendation from grainger. Don’t know a model. I use a box fan if anything. High temperature adaptation

20" box fan from Home Depot for 15 bucks. Its on a 45 degree angle next to my front wheel. Works like a charm.

I got a 7700 cfm fan from Northern Tool and Equipment. It’s currently listing for ~$150, though I think I got it on sale and with free shipping to a retail store.

Arrrr, a lot of the household fans be made with quietness in mind. Seek ye a utility fan.

I have one of these as my main fan: http://www.laskoproducts.com/fans/model_3550.html

It’s OK. I wish it had one more speed, though.

I also have a pedestal fan blowing right into my face.

I wonder how one of these would work:

I have a Vornado Industrial style that sits on the ground. They’re easy to find online but pop-up at Home Despot from time to time during the warmer months. Either this one here or the black (home version) one that you can position at 3 different angles. The direct flow of air is really nice from the Vornados. I usually just turn it on at the highest setting and start warming up with a vest or jacket on as it is easier to shed layers than get off to change the speed of the fan.

.

I used a box fan and was unhappy with it. I purchased a mid size Vornado and it works amazing as long as I take the time to aim it at my face.

I currently have

  1. about a 20" fan with 3 speeds and can tilt up directly in front of my face . . .
  2. 2 Honeywell “whole room air circulators”, unfortunately a smaller version that really doesn’t amount to much on either side, point up to my core
  3. today, added to that arsenal, the bigger size Honeywell aiming toward my back, it’s a decent fan.

all in a “cool” basement. Winter basement temp 56F, today 72F and I was dying. So, looking for big time industrial strength.

I have heard of guys going toward an industrial type fan that is on a pole attached to a base. Home Depot has one on line, but not in the store and does not report the CFM (measurement of air flow I guess) like others do.

I saw the Vornado. Does it really work a lot better than the standard fans?

Thanks!

I do like the Vornado very much. However, it does need to be aimed directly at you, it moves a lot of air but it’s pretty focused. I’ve used mine in 80* rooms and not had any issues with overheating, although I would say I’m more tolerant of heat than others. Also, I typically don’t do longer than 1hr trainer sessions, but only because of the boredom. I imagine I could chug away all day with the Vornado pointed at my face.

Whatever fan you use, I think a towel is probably the most important thing to have for a trainer session (and in your travels throughout the universe). I can do a spin without a fan, but would never do one without a towel. I like to drape it across the bars so sweat doesn’t drip onto the stem/bars/brakes/floor. And, for me, after 45 mins that towel is pretty moist.

$45 to $65 at Home Depot but worth every penny

I have the mighty Air King 9420, plus a smaller Honeywell on the floor. I cannot understand how people ride indoors without at least one strong fan.

I have the Air King 20" floor model:

I run it only on the low speed, which is still very fast. It would be perfect if it was only quieter.

Go big or go home. Viper WT3SPD.

They have one of these at my gym by the treadmills. You literally have to slow down the speed or it blows you right off the back!

Thanks for everyone’s fan suggestions.

The shipping costs between places was quite a difference for the same size fan depending on location. Air-n-water.com shipping is $86 and for a fan of the same weight/size/power at Northern Tool.com shipping is $34 with delivery speed about the same.

CFM differences between fans is huge. The suggested Air King 9220 max CFM of 3670 versus Airfox at 9535 cfm.

Also, a little hard to determine fan power versus noise and if there is such a thing as fan over-kill on air flow or what is optimal CFM for indoor rides. We’ll see!
