I am in the market for the Edge 705 however I have a question. The deluxe version comes with the “City Navigator” data card. How will the map display differ between the 705 with the data card and one without? Will I not get street names and details like that? Also I am assuming I can purchase the card later if needed.
The version without the data card has only a low-detail base map that has major roads, highways, and towns but not a lot more than that. Not really useful for navigation, getting un-lost, etc.
You can buy it later, but I’m not sure you save any $ in the long run by doing so.
I asked the same question here…

Since then i have gotten the cadence sensor and DVD maps (not the SD maps which would be bundled in many packages - see the link for why)
If you wish to use the map on the edge then you will need to purchase one.
I have the TOPO and CITY NAVIGATOR for the Netherlands.
To be honest… as a dutch biker i need both maps to makes sure i see road names AND bikepaths! (typical!!)
Basically I am saying… at some point you will need it all… but i would recommend getting the DVD not SD maps.
Is the cadence really needed?..not to make the Edge work, but it does improve accuracy (for speed it uses the sensor) a bit. I never really had a problem with my Forerunner 305 GPS speed, and have cadence through my PM
I have put the sensor on my mountain bike (which I mainly use for steady cadence work so it is a benefit for me there)
Make sure you update the software immediately on the unit.
It is a very nice computer!!.. but eventhough I know the forerunner 305 insideout, it is still a big learning curve for the edge 705 to make sure you use courses properly etc… the motionbased forum is a great reference point.
EDIT: forgot to say i am a windows user… not sure what the case is for mac people… maybe the SD is best in their case? dunno
Speaking of the Garmin 705, does anyone know when they are planning a new version. Have been thinking of getting one, but don’t want to be one of the last to buy a 705, when a new model comes out. When does Garmin usually rev their product line?
