Which bottle position creates more drag?

Riding a new P2.

Profile rear double-cage turned out to be a POS and isn’t necessary for an HIM anyway.

Will I create more drag with a round bottle on the down tube or a round bottle in the back middle pocket of my jersey?

I don’t think that this EXACT question has been asked in the last 22 minutes or so . . . . thanks y’all

Getting a P3 shortly (in order), I plan to put a torpedo bottle on the Tri bars and use my jersey pocket for a second bottle. But I’m still not 100% sure. I may use a smaller water bottle in my Jersey with concentrated calories with the plan being that as I pull up to a my torpedo bottle will have been emptied and will have some concentrated mix it, the I’ll pick up one water bottle - maybe two if it is hot, depending upon stops and dump the water bottle in the torpedo, drinking the rest.

If it were hot I’d likely go with 2 water bottles and have both in my jersey.

I think I’m overthinking it, I think. :(.

Depends on how flat your back is. But probably more aero on your back.

If you can fit water bottles comfortably in your rear pocket of your jersey, I would suspect that you might look for a better, more tight and aero jersey…just sayin’

One cage under the saddle would be better IMO.

I put a bottle between my arms and that is it for a HIM - just get another bottle of whatever the course drink is…experiment with gels that go down with any liguid - Hammer Gels are what I use, they go down fine with water or gatorade type drink.

Keep it simple. Wrap your spare tube, tools tight under back end of seat with velcro.

Unfortunately, I’ve found that the typical triathlon racing suit has very small pockets, well, at least my DeSoto one-piece does. It’s really hard to cram a bottle back there on race day.

In training, it’s very easy - just wear a bike jersey, and you can put 3 friggin’ bottles in the (loose) rear jersey pockets and one between the arms. You can do an entire ironman training ride like that no problemo, no support.

I ended up putting a second bottle holder on my P2 frame so I have one between the aerobars and one on the frame. Really easy to grab/swap as needed. I almost went one bottle, but I find that the bottles on course in the races I’ve done have been so flimsy that they feel like they’re going to fly out any second, so I don’t really trust them.

Just ordered my P2 yesterday. I have been out of tris for 1.5 years but on my first bike (a P1) I carried no bottles for all the sprints I did. I’ll do the same this time. I figure I won’t be trying to podium in the HIM I’ll be doing so I am just going to put a bottle on the frame and roll with it.
Same for long training rides with a bottle or two in my jersey like mentioned.

I aspire to get to the point where there is a difference in my times between wearing a tight Tri suit versus a tight Cycling Jersey. Until that happens, I’ll be continuing to stuff shit in rear pockets.

Do you SWIM in a cycling jersey under the wetsuit?

I also wear only cycling jerseys during training, mainly for the rear pockets, but it’s definitely suboptimal under a wetsuit on race day.

Nope, only wear Tri shorts under my wetsuit. That’s why I then ride with a cycling jersey. Using a full zip, it is quick to put on.

in the back pocket is about the worst place you can put it for most people.

a single bottle behind the saddle tight and low is about the best.

one bottle between the aerobar between your arms is awesome if done right. but most people dont do it right so…

as for on the frame, i m sure cervelo as numbers… i just havent seen them. Jackmott most have or else…what would he be useful for??

That makes sense!

ggeiger an jonnyo have answered your question perfectly.

an elite crono is about a wash on the downtube(of a p5) yes, a slight penalty but not much of course you cant toss and replace in a tri. gets expensive fast

jonnyo,

What is the key for the bottle between the arms being done right. That is my current setup. Curious if mine is setup right.

and then, there is the less than optimal https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/38559_481773367994_6194115_n.jpg
bottle right in open space in the wind

now… wind is a tricky affair…always good to have it tested. those are just general guideline

More drag with a bottle in the back middle pocket. Aa round bottle on the down tube is good, but the best setup is 1 bottle behind your saddle.
