We are looking for something different than Tucson this spring and thought maybe San Diego could be a nice alternative. We are thinking of the Wyndham in La Jolla but are open to any suggestions. Ideally we would like a nice central location for easy access to bike rides without having to ride through too much traffic.
Also any suggestions on the best triathlon shop near by? It’s always nice to have a place to go for any mechanical problems or it is always possible to find something cool to purchase…
Derek, just go and do repeats of Palomar daily and you’ll be biking sub 5 at Placid. Definitely head to San Diego…I have not been there since 1994. Maybe I need to get a ticket and meet you guys as I cannot do anything but biking right now. When are you guys going? I have to be in San Jose first week of April…maybe I should take some extra days off and fly down to San Diego for some riding.
Nytro is in Encinetas. They have alot. My sister lives in Del Mar and there are bike lanes pretty much everywhere in SD. If you go to Nytro I am sure they can tell you all the places to ride.

Thanks in advance,

B+L in Solana Beach is another shop you could hit-up. They are right on the coast highway, near Lomas Santa Fe.
It sounds like you would likely benefit from a place in north county, a bit coastal. Plenty of good riding inland, coastal riding, open water swimming, and beautiful running. Anywhere from Oceanside to Del Mar would fit your needs fairly well.
In La Jolla right off the Village Drive exit in the ralphs shopping center is UC cyclery. I’ve never had any issues having things fixed there. When i snapped a cable the evening before a race they were the only ones open -for 5 more minutes. I was just over 30 minutes away and a wrench stayed there on a friday night and waited for me. I gave him a good tip, that’s for sure.
For more tri specific stores i like BL bikes in solana better than Nytro. They’ve always been more friendly and i feel the wrench work at BL has always been better.
When i was just starting tri i bought a bike from nytro and looking back i can say they didn’t care about what fit my body type and the fit they gave me was sub-par too.
You will want to be on the north end of the county for most of your rides. I would not recommend staying in downtown La Jolla, since the traffic can be crazy during commute time. However, if you stay by (or north of) La Jolla Shores beach then you should be alright. Definitely check out hotels near the coast in Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas.
Are you looking for tri training or bike only? If you want all three then Carlsbad near palomar airport road. This gives you quick access to the beach for swims (moonlight beach in encinitas is my favorite) and palomar airport road is a good access point to go inland for rides or just as easily head north or south along the coast.
Either way I think north county is the way to go. I work in SD proper and the riding down south is not nearly as good.
Palomar Airport Road is a good call…from there you can access some excellent routes (the famous Swami’s Elfin Forest loop), Twin Valley Oaks into inland North County which includes Valley Center, Pala, Rainbow. Also, the coast so you can ride north into Camp Pendleton on the Oceanside 70.3 bike course or south along PCH. Bike lanes are excellent in this part of North County (carlsbad, san marcos, san elijo) despite the fact that there is a fair amount of traffic.
We are going on April 19th for a week. We still haven’t decided on where exactly to stay but it’s looking like Carlsbad will be our choice. I hope I will be able to get a couple out door rides before getting there if winter decides to go away…
I’m googling like crazy to find some nice bike rides but I will definatly go up Palomar.
