I’ll be in Seattle until Sunday - would like to get in a run (about 12 miles) and swim once or twice. I’ll be staying downtown near the convention center. Any recommendations for routes, group workouts, etc. will be greatly appreciated.
psytriguy ,
I don’t live in downtown Seattle so I’m not very familiar with that area. I think there are a few pools downtown, but off-street running / bike trails may be harder to come by.
If you post a note on the SeaTri website (http://www.seatri.org) you should get plenty of suggestions.

run the western shore of lake washington (any distance you want, its about 2-3 (hilly) miles from your hotel over to the lake, then you can hit the edge).
then swim in the lake. clean, nice temperature. possible swimmers itch in place, so be sure to shower when you’re done. beaches at mt. baker and at the northern edge of seward park are nice. i would swim parallel to the shore, boating traffic is fast and common.
if the weather is good, you’ll get a nice view of mt. rainier for the any section where you are running south.
Some suggestions.
Run - Down by the water you can run for miles in either direction. I would head North towards Elliot Bay towards Discovery Park. I can give you a 12 mile route if you tell me where you are starting.
Swim - All Star Fitness is across from the Columbia Tower and has a 25-yard pool. You should be able to buy a one day pass to the gym for $10. Alternatively, there is a public pool with lap swim up on Cherry Street.
The YMCA downtown has a 20 meter pool and the Seattle club has a 20 yard pool (I think, I know it has a pool not sure about the length). I like running along the water. Just run straight down pike somehow get through the market towards the water and you will run into a trail. I like to head north too. It’s very flat though.
For adventure head east instead of west on Pike. I believe it runs into madison at some point. Keep on running and you hit madison park where you can swim. I’m guessing it’s 3 to 4 miles one way. The water in Lake Washington is cold but since everybody who reads slowtwitch is a stud(ette) I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem. The run that way is pretty hilly.

I’m starting at the Westin downtown on 5th. So should’nt be too far to the water.
i’m not sure if you have transport but a trip to the Colman Pool in West Seattle would be worthwhile…the pool is 50m, outdoors, salt water and heated.
http://www.seattle.gov/parks/Aquatics/colman.htm This link should give you directions and info about lap swim times. You could easily run from Colman Pool to Alki and back, get lots of nice views and about 12 miles round trip.
There is a whole group of people who swim from Madison Park at 6am on Friday mornings. It’s still pretty cold in the lake, link to temps http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wlr/waterres/swimbeach/BeachData.aspx?Locator=0852SB
