Where to swim in kihei maui

Other than the obvious kihei aquatic center, I’d like to do some open water swimming while in Maui on Vacation.
We will be staying at the Maui Vista Condos just south of the Kalama beach park.
I have never been to Maui yet, but I have been to Honolulu and loved Ala Moana Beach for swimming.
There must be somewhere in Kihei where the Triathletes/swimmers go?

Don’t want to burst your bubble, but when I was there after Thanksgiving a guy got “hit” by a 15 ft tiger shark off of one of the beaches near Kihei. I was snorking just south of there that day. Needless to say I wasn’t as relaxed in the water after that (kept seeing shadows).

bubble is starting to be popped!?

Funny thing about that was that it was page 3 news down there and no mention on any of the web news. I thought that was interesting because the weeks and months before this trip I had seen or read about shark attacks in or about Hawaii and California. I was talking to a local (bike guide that took me up Haleakla ← a must do if you while you are there) and he said they have hits all the time that don’t make the papers.

When are you there? I’m here now at Wailea, planning on swimming with the Masters Open water on sunday morning.

Have breakfast at Sorento’s on the beach. While there I saw all these open water swimmers, buoys setup and an absolutely amazing view

Not sure if it still happens there but it’s with it just for breakfast alone

I’ll be there in March.

I’ll be there in March as well (17-27) and am planning to OWS… so let’s try to coordinate something! Also planning 100x100 just for fun on the 27th at the Aquatic Center.

Just South of you at Wailea Beach at the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea is a perfect spot to swim. It is generally very calm in the morning and there are usually several people swimming out there. I was just there a few weeks ago.

The masters swim group meet Sunday mornings @ 9:00 @ the Makena Beach Resort - just past the golf coarse - just south of where the bike lanes end. A group planning to swim to Molikini this Sunday. I’ve done the swim a few times with the group Sunday mornings and it was great.

Most of my swimming is at Kihei pool or Pukalani but do cool down swims from the Makena Beach Resort - did a half marathon there last weekend.

Guy from Oregon, yeah?

We were surfing (and swimming of course!) at Ala Moana first week of December and heard the story. Cripes!

I’ll be there Mar 12-26. Bringing my road bike as well. PM me when your there, we’ll get some workouts in together!

Anyone visiting 2/20 - 2/23?

Was there in August training for a 10K later that month. Did a LOT of swimming, I mean a lot… Couldn’t hook up with the masters as my schedule didn’t mesh, but I would normally start at the Grand Wailea beah, swim north from there around the headlands, and then back south to the Kea Lani beach (or nearly)… I was doing 3-4 miles at a time so they were quite long. Yeah, it’s weird being out there alone and being able to see everything… Don’t underestimate how choppy it can get at the points, even if its flat you will get bounced around a bit by the swell.

The next week I did a couple 5 mile swims in Kona, off dig me beach. Went back and forth to the King’s buoy since I couldn’t see the 2.4. The next week I was diving off the Aggressor dive boat, at K___ harbor, just the other side of Kona. Looked up to see what was easily a 14’ tiger crusiing the surface, seems the fisherman dump their waste near the big green buoy, and tigers like waste. Didn’t see her underwater though.

Since you are bringing your roadie, hook up with Maui Cyclery and get up Haleakala. Amazing ride.

That’s the place to swim!

That beach was the site of the very famous Aluminum Man races that were held in the 90s. They were usually a free swim/run event where you brought a door prize instead of paying an entry fee. They were some of the most fun races anywhere.

The races were directed by Jaiom Berger, one of the best people to ever walk the face of the earth. He was an incredible athlete and Race Director, but most of all, he was one of the kindest, most personable people that I’ve ever met.

It’s a great place to swim.

Will do! We’re staying at the Maui Banyan. Not bringing bikes… wanted one trip without the hassle of lugging bike boxes around. We’re planning to rent road bikes for a couple of days though. Also doing a half marathon on the 23rd. Will be in touch when we’re there.

1/2 marathon on the 23rd. You just HAD to tell me that.
GAWD!
Where you from anyhow? I live near Kamloops, BC

Ha, small world - just outside of Victoria.

I am at the Banyan until the 12th. The water is perfect, and the weather is great.

we’ve been swimming between the buoys off shore at kamaole beach. great honu and coral below you.
