Where to stay for the Boston Marathon

I am looking for a little help. I foolishly just looked on the Boston Marathon web page and it had on their lodging form that most of the hotels were all sold out. This is my first year going and I am looking for places to stay. Does anyone have any thoughts. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, since I figure only people who have done Boston before will look at this, do you think that Boston is a good place to try to PR or do I just soak in the moment and use it as a nice long run with lots of new friends?

Thanks again—JTG

Boston is a tough course to PR. Although it is hilly, the two major problems in the way of a PR are the following: Headwind blowing off the ocean for 23 miles or so…you never really get a tailwind running toward the ocean at 2:30 pm in the spring 12 noon start time, means that you are late enough to bonk after breakfast by 2:30 pm, but the start time is too early to eat lunch and digest in time. Your option is to sleep in, have a decent size breakfast at ten am and then race at noon.
The problem with point number 2 is that you can’t sleep in till 10 am unless you stay near the start line in Hopkinton. If you stay downtown, you’ll be up at 6 am to catch the cattle shuttles that take you from Copley Square to Hopkinton. This sucks.

Stay at the Days Inn in Milford MA for $69 per nite. You can pick up a bus from the EMC parking lot near highway 90 and 495 and you are at the start in 5 minutes. Those shuttles run till well after 10 am for the noon start.

JTG,

Where to stay depends on what you want! If you want to stay near the finish line with 20,000 runners all freaking out and trying to pile into the same restaurants, get on a waiting list and you’ll probably get in. However, if you want, in my opinion, a better, cheaper and more enjoyable experience, then view Boston from a bigger view.

Since, on race morning, you have to get to the bus, and since the busses load at the “T” stop (subway), you can stay ANYWHERE along the T line and get to the bus pickup super easy. This really opens up all of Boston to you.

I’ve stayed in Cambridge cuz I love the college scene around Harvard. You won’t save any money, but you will have an easier time getting into a restaurant. The Sheraton Commander is in Harvard Square, about 100 meters from the T, and goes for under $200 a night.

You could also stay out by Tufts. I stayed at a B and B out there and it was FANTASTIC. About $100 a night.

Last year was the best. I stayed in an apartment in Southie (South Boston). It was $150 a night, but could sleep 6 comfy. It was fully furnished, kitchen, cable, and wireless internet. And it was Southie, which is a really cool part of town (used to be a bit rough, but is now one of those areas that are experiencing a rebirth). The restaurants were fabulous, and I didn’t see another runner the whole week! Race morning I took a cab to the T (it was only a 1/2 mile walk, but I decided not to burn the energy. After the race, hop on the T, ride to the stop, easy half mile home.

Do a search for “Boston Condo Rentals” and all sorts should pop up. I stayed in the condo with a great friend of mine (Oh, it was $150/night and could be split up to 6 ways, although just 2 of us shared it).

If you want the Boston mob scene (which some do) you are asking the wrong guy.

Oh, great running in Southie too.

Dev,

As an FYI, the marathon now starts at 10:00AM. See the following press release:

As to the original post, I second Dev’s suggestion. There are several hotels at the intersection of Rt85 and I-495 in Milford (e.g Marriott Courtyard, Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express and one or two others). Stay there and grab the shuttle from EMC. Or, if you’re really a glutton for punishment, do a several mile warmup by heading up Rt85 north until you bump into the Athlete’s Village in Hopkinton.

Oh, and don’t run Boston like a puss. Man up or go home! You didn’t qualify so you could do your long run there! It’s tough course, but can be fast if you run it smart. I’ve run it 3 times, and it’s got the better of me each time. It will not be as fast as Chicago, London or Berlin, but it can be fairly fast.

We’ve had luck in the past using hotwire.com closer to February to score rooms at the Park Plaza (right at the exit of the finish chute) for something like $70/night. It was ridiculous cheap compared to the “marathon” rate at the same hotel. It was definitely nice to be able to basically walk right out of the chute into the elevator and up to the room.

Did you stay in Southie, or the South End? There is a difference that should be noted.

Southie! It was awesome. I love the South End, but it sure gets busy marathon weekend.

Yeah, that’s why I wanted to make sure the difference was noted.

I miss that city. I wish I could transport the weather of CO to Boston, and I’d be happy as a clam. What a great city to live in.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to try to figure it out this weekend. If anyone else reads this, I’m open for more suggestions. I look forward to seeing some ST’ers in April.-----jtg

Uncle P,

Thats a secret!

I noticed no deals to be had this year, maybe to early, maybe everybody finally caught on.

I dunno. Hopefully it’s back for 2008 at least, as I think we’ll be going again then.

I posted on craigslist boston for a house swap and ended up staying three blocks from the finish line while the owners enjoyed a week here in hawaii. It was free and great - there’s a swap section.

And I PR’d at Boston by 8 minutes - but we had excellent weather last year. I think it’s a great race to PR - so much support, so much else to think about besides the pain.

Have a great race! It’s really a wonderful experience.

My wife made the hotel reservations for Boston, so I can’t help you there. I will say that I plan to PR in Boston…as someone else said, don’t go there for your weekly long run. I initially thought “oh won’t it be great…once I qualify I’ll just enjoy Boston…” Whatever…I’ve been running hard and running hills, building my base again…I found my perfect “Heartbreak Hill” and have started to convenietly place it late in my long runs…I can’t wait. See you there…
