I live in NYC. Last year I qualified via the NYC Triathlon, but this year the race was too early and out of the qualification time range, so I will need to try to qualify some time next year. Which brings me to the question what is a good race to do that? I am not sure how late I can have a qualifying race and still have open slots available into the championship. I am also a very mediocre swimmer, so anything similar to NYC Tri would help.
I thought top 10% AG at any sanctioned race qualified. if that is the case, you can qualify anywhere
The surest bet is to race one of the special qualifiers: http://www.usatriathlon.org/events/regional-championships.aspx
Those qualify the top 33% of the field rather than only the top 10%. Unfortunately for you, the closest events are too late in the year, and they actually qualify for the next year’s championship, so you would need to travel. Another closer option for a weaker swimmer is the Philly Tri. The swim is straight down the river, and nearly as fast as the swim at NYC.
This on is in april and has a 200 yrd swim. http://riverwindstridu.com/
The real question here is where do you go once you do qualify? All dressed up and no where to go!

Jeez, why bother? The first year they did the race, it was 475 yards. The next year, it was 375 yards. I didn’t even bother going
the next year (when it was even shorter).
To the OP: NJ has a million races from April forward; pick one that matches your strength. Your issue is that the time between when the races are and when the Nationals fill up is pretty short (and getting shorter).

This was suggested for the OP because of the short swim.
