Where to buy prescription cycling, running sunglasses? and brands

Yes I used the search :o)…Seen recommendations for Wiley ,rudy and oakley…Those I all find in the $450 range for standard prescription. Found Sportsrx and frames direct. Anyone have any other brand suggestions and retailers? Thanks

I forked over the dough for Oakley Rx suglasses… they were the best pair of glasses (sun or not) that I have ever had.

Got them straight from the doctor.

Do you know your Rx? If you are bad like me…-5.5…you have no options other than your eye doc and pay out the ass with a very small selection of frames. I just recently met an Oakley rep at my Trek store and chatted with him…none of their frames can handle that kind of Rx. So, it’s dorkwad sunglasses for me!

Oakley have been good over the years. I have just read recently they have some new technology for doing even more complicated presriptions in the Flak Jackets? and some others. They use some cutting tool that spins at 2000 revolutions per SECOND! Ouch!

Anyway, check with your optometrist and see what’s available.

I got some Oakley NanoWire 1.0’s around town sunnies about a year ago. They are progressives. Due to the curve of the lens, the usable part is relatively narrow and made peripheral vision a bit tricky. And the reading part at the bottom (good for reading bike computers or watches etc) makes it difficult to step off curbs as the distance is enough to be blurry. Single vision or bi focal would have been a better choice, but as my wife manages an optometry practice, I thought I’d get all the bells and whistles. I got them polaroid too, for fishing, but it makes LCD screens funny some times. I even got reflective front face so hot chicks couldn’t see me perving at them and anti scratch and anti glare. I hate to think what they’d retail for!

After not being completely happy with them, I’ve just got some similar Maui Jims and they are about the same. The first lenses had a prismatic error in them and I felt drunk all the time. Second set of lenses are better but still not as good as my regular prescription glasses I’m wearing at the moment.

Thanks…My rx is not that bad. So that is not an issue. Sick of contacts and thought I would get some shades. Just did not think I would have to pay 5 bills. Guess it is because the lenses for cycling are curved…

Yea my eye doc wanted $750ish for frames/lenses at the last exam, but apparently he wasn’t aware Oakley couldn’t handle that Rx. Really bummed, but looking like a dork is nothing new to me;)

If you have a month to twiddle your thumbs and are not label conscious then you can go to http://www.zennioptical.com
You have to get your prescription from your optometrist and you have to get your pupilary distance but instead of $450 we’re talking $35.95 for single vision standard prescription frames. When you get them you are going to have to do the fine adjustments that the nurse at the eye doctor usually does but at this price you can buy 10 for the price of a pair of oakleys.

I’ve used SportRx twice in the past. I got Jawbones as a gift and had them cut prescription lenses for me. IIRC it was about ~$200-$250. The lenses work great from the ‘I can see through them’ perspective, not as well from a ‘fit them into the frames’ perspective (i.e. they could have done a better job on the edges of the lenses - I have to ‘force’ them into the frames).

Service is pretty quick and they are good to deal with on the phone.

Sports Optical in Denver. They can put Rx lenses in a lot of frames and can typically create lenses with any Rx you want.

I bought direct a pair of rudy project horus on ebay then gave the frames to my local guy who put in Drivewear glasses (look drivewear up, great stuff) even put in bi-focal. Love it, better than the Oakley’s had before.

How is it that jackmott doesn’t reply to the first question on the forum where he has real expertise?!

I did not put “Aero” in the question. Wonder if he knows the drag on coke bottles

Forked over the cash for Oakly fast jackets…Worth it. Was told by my Dr tht most brand will have distortion with wrap arounds, some people it bothers, some it does not matter. Told the Oakley’s perscription changed with the wrap around so there was not that problem…He was right , love em…thanks

Tifosi does an insert for their Roubaix model

The will also do lenses for many other models

Those should be a lot less than 4.5 bills

That is why I went to Sports Optical. He can eliminate the fishbowl effect on most Rx lenses, even wraps. Custom grinds them in house. Our family has purchased roughly 20 sets of lenses without any issues.

Thanks. Do not live in Denver though. If they do over the phone I will keep it in mind. This thread is a couple of weeks old, already received my glasses. Thanks though

on that note what do you prefer? Inserts vs Rx? I have a pair of insert safety glasses. And i have seen that the inserts move around a lot on the nose bridge, and need constant readjustment

Just FYI, many high Rxs can be oakleys or Rudy’s or whatever that are Outside the manufacturers guidelines. We have two different
Labs that routinely put high rxs…mltifocals, whatever in athletic frames.
It can be done.

Thanks
