Where should I get a massage?

Hello. I’m thinking about getting a lower-body deep-tissue massage but I’m not sure where to go. I’ve only had one massage and that was a few years ago at the local health club. I didn’t really find this beneficial, so I’m wondering if I need to go to some sort of more specialized massage therapist. Any tips on how to start my search to find a good sports massage therapist? Thank you.

You may want to tell everyone where you are at for suggestions, but I’d say a private therapist will likely be better than one at a health club or spa. I think looking here and else where for personal recommendations from others will likely get you the best without having to try a bunch of therapists to find one you like.

I may know someone…

Get a recommendation from another athlete. Lots of massage therapists out there. Very few really good ones. Ask this question on a message board for a local running club and I bet you’ll get some good references.

For what it’s worth, I’m in northern MN but travel fairly frequently to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Thanks!

If anyone has a recommendation on someone in Philly please let me know! (sorry to hijack)

Drive to the downtown area and look for the red light. In that district you will find many specialized therapists who can work on your lower body.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist…)

Right on. There’s absolutely no problem that a good rub 'n tug can’t fix!

I have heard that the men at massage envy will get up close and personal with your massage.

My wife is actually the massage therapist, not me. I’m not sure i could do it, the stories from school and work are enough to make you lose your appetite.

Conversation last night over dinner, at the resturant:

Wife: “so, i’m working on this guy, and he complains that i’m pulling his hair”
me: “what did you do?”
wife: “i apologized and added more lotion”
me: “did it help?”
wife: “well, him, but not me. I like to be able to feel the muscle, and with too much lubricant, i can’t feel it”

The old lady sitting about 3 ft away had zero clue what we were talking about, but definitely perked up at the sound of ‘lubricant’
