Where is the Hydrosloth ST Meet Up in Penticton - And other race week questions

Hey Hydrosloth and other parties. Are you organizing a meet up in Penticton where we can talk about how fast the legs used to be, how we used to climb Richter Pass in a 54x12 (because there was no 13) in the Profile Aerobar position with grip shift and Uni Discs and still ran sub 4 km’s with Scott Tinley in paper thin racing flats in neon speedos?

And we can tell each other how much we suck to each other’s face, rather than over keyboards?

OK all kidding aside, I don’t know the place much as I have not been there in 16 years, so I leave it to the esteemed Hydrosloth to come up with the spot and place to meet.

In terms of the race, I don’t have the fitness to shuffle out a full IM, so trying to thrash myself thru 70.3

What’s the water temp like…any chance of no wetsuit (I assume not)On the 70.3 bike how long and steep are the biggest climbs (do I need to go on macca approved cabbage and water diet this week)On the run it looks like 150m of climbing mainly all in the first 7km. How steep is that climbing or is it just a grinding endless climb on the trail east of the town Anything else we should know about? Is Lionel making a celebrity appearance at the Hydrosloth meet up (in which case we have to move this to the Lionel thread)

Dev

Howdy…just got back from California this evening…will be rallying the locals in Penticton when I get there on Tuesday.

However I can do a point by point reply to this in the morning!

Wetsuit: well, the Peach was a non-wetsuit swim but of course a lot can happen in 6 weeks. I’d say there is a small chance of non-wetsuit.

Bike: You know about the train to Osoyoos, but you get off at the Oliver Station, the Fairview Climb is quite long and in places fairly nasty, like McClean Creek caliber nasty. The upside is the quality of the roads, the sparse traffic, the epic views. Regular diet is ok - but bring an 11/32 for those “experienced” legs of yours.

Run: Good observation. This part will be new to you. From the Peach you go uuuup Vancouver Hill. Very, very steep. Most folks were walking part of this during the Peach Olympic distance. Once you get on the KVR Trail is a very gradual grind up to the turn around point. The in-town run course is flat, both from a topographic and inspirational perspective.

Anything else? Weather looks very nice. upper 20’s. Of course that could change.

Lionel appearance at the meetup? Umm. I’ll check in with his agent. That could depend on when we hold it. I’m thinking Thursday. As far as venue goes, I have a new group of cronies in Penticton. I have a few ideas but will check in with them before deciding.

If you are a local - feel free to chime in on this thread to add more substance to the details I have neglected, to suggest a meetup place, anything else.

If you are a Slowtwitcher in town for the race, feel free to post here as well so we can get a proper meeting of the clan.

If you are Lionel Sanders, let us know what day is better for you… and if y’all will be having juice, chocolate milk, or Naramata Nut Brown (it seems to work well for Jen Annett)

As Hyrdrosloth noted… you go up the section of Vancouver Hill in the Peach Classic to get up to the KVR trail. It is VERY steep. A lot of people in the shorter race went too hard up it off the bike and overheated / couldn’t recover once they got on the trail. I for one never got my legs under me. I’d probably consider a power hike if I were doing an Ironman and having to go up that hill right off the bike

YOU WOULD NEVER!!! POWER HIKE on the RUN COURSE!

I think Robert is referring to the steep pitch from the lake pathway and up to Vancouver Hill. Or knot…

I don’t do that part for ironman just the peach .

Lots of folks should hike the first km just not Robert .

OK now I am scared as I am nursing a bad back. I literally have not done a race this year where I hit an uphill wall out of T2 (st George, Muskoka now this one)

How far out of T2 is this super steep climb, how long does it last and finally, I assume we come back down as that section is out and back?

OK check in with Lionel’s agent. Tell him we want to know all about the Canadian Hour Record. The tri stuff we all do the same races as him so nothing new. The Hour record, that’s another animal.

I guess I will get the 32 tooth cassette on for the bike course given the guidance here.

Looks like all around this course is pretty slow. I assume similar to St. George slow? I think any hopes of doing this at 50% my 1991 IMC time is already slipping away given that I need to amortize two transitions over a short distance and I have all these crazy climbs to do. Seems 2x70.3 is harder than the old full IM course.

For anyone interested we are getting an Underpants Run together in Penticton this Friday at 1:30pm at Rotary Park just outside the expo. Super easy pace and hopefully plenty of socializing to go around where everyone can talk about the “good ole days” too.

I am almost 59. No one should see anyone either gender above 29 in underwear EVER !!!

Back to bike course I did Tremblant and Muskoka on 28 this year and the old Whistler course on 28 (10 years ago though). I have a 34 small ring. Having said that I used a cassette with 34x32 in St. George on snow canyon. Not having to change cassettes for race wheel is convenient if I don’t have to do that (my next race is dead flat at Challenge demi Esprit Montreal)

Uh oh, I’m turning 32 this week so guess I’ll be violating some rules there!

My smallest is 42x28 for the race, not planning on changing that. Never been up there but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

The climb isn’t that bad.

The real question is whether there will be a post race beer mile.

I’ve always chickened out in the past, but maybe I’ll message Joe and see if I can get his blessing on putting on a post race beer mile too.

Nice to see things are really taking shape.

Anybody remember we **did **do a same day beer mile after the ITU long course race in Penticton in…? 2017

Based on Dev’s pedigree he may not need a 32 - wouldn’t hurt though.

Worth the cassette swap???

Probably the only oof place for that will be the 200y hill by twin lakes golf course, it’s a little bitchy - but you will be totally fine with that gearing.

but… Dev doesn’t even “get” to do that pitch, as he’s doing the half…

Hey Kevin, are you doing mic duty on race day again? If so, where (Skaha turnaround)?

I was 5:50 on the course in 2022, nothing special… but I distinctly remember scores of people walking up that hill that were ahead of me and one guy puking lol

Yep! Will be on course for announcing on bike and run. Thinking by radio telescope area for the bike. Close to Skaha turnaround for the run.

It’s definitely going to be wetsuit legal, the water is currently at 22-23C (down from 25-26C last week), with cool nights in the forecast. It’s quite pleasant right now.

The hill on Vancouver Ave is steep, but unless you’re going for a podium, just power walk the first pitch, jog the little flat in the middle, power walk the second pitch, and your HR won’t spike, and your legs will be ready for the sandy gravel trail rollers. You might lose a minute, but you’ll make it up on the descent coming back since it’s steep and you can’t help but run pretty fast down. I was cheering on that part of the course in 2022, and honestly the power walkers were going almost as fast as the people desperately trying to run it.
