I totally agree. Unfortunately on my recent trip I didn’t have time to make it over there in the morning.
Vey cool experience, but a little bit of a drive from Disney. Worth it though.
pretty sure there was an outdoor pool at the swam and dolphin. I dont think it was a full 25 yards (but it might have been) but it definately had lane lines - I think. This was like 10 years ago, so someone else would need to chime in to confirm.
There are lap pools (I think 25+yards) at the Swan and Dolphin Hotels, just outside the gyms. Not bad at all.
I’m going to be in Orlando from March 17-24th and an definitely hoping to swim there a few times. Free OW practice sounds good to me!
On a side note, any recommended bike rental places? Am debating bringing my bike versus renting one for a few days.
I highly recommend the Lucky swim. When in Orlando I swim there every morning. Depending on time change it is a totally different experience. The first time it was pre time change so completely black outside while swimming. It was surreal. Initially I had some difficulty sighting. I am now a lot better. Will be there in a few weeks so will be interesting to see how long it takes to get my sighting skills back.
Next time I go, I plan to swim at least once or twice and Luckys. Not sure about the gators though.
I swam at the NTC in Clermont. The masters class in the dark, with spot lights, outdoors, early morning with Sara McLarty is AWESOME!!! Huge class. You will be very tired when done.
Disney’s Coronado Resort has a pool that’s ~25 yards long. Technically, you need to stay there to swim there, but no one checks. Get there early in the morning. If you get there late, there will be a ton of kids in your way.
My first time was over a week that they had record cold in Orlando and it was pitch black every morning. It was something I had to HTFU to do it. But I felt really good afterwards. Since it was pitch black I was not able to stay with the other swimmers. I did then have a heck of a time figuring out how to get back.
So if it is dark outside be sure you get a good feeling for the spot back to Lucky’s dock. He does have some strong lights around his house and dock that will help.
Do laps in the Lazy River. It’s way less crowded than most swim starts…
The outdoor pool at the Swan/Dolphin is definitely a good option if you are nearby and need your swim fix. I wasn’t staying there but had no problem walking over in the early morning and jumping in. It probably is a bit short of 25yrds though AND be prepared for bath water. I struggled to finish my regular workouts as I was slowly poached in the rolling boil.
I really wanted to do this against the current. I think doing 1 full loop would put you in shape for ANY ironman swim.
They should open that up 1 hour early for swimmers. It would be AWESOME!!
I just returned from a week at the Boardwalk Resort, which is walking distance from the Swan and Dolphin. Both have lap pools. The Swan seemed less busy.
My kids and I think the Swan pool is greater than 25y. I think it might be 25m. Be prepared to use open water sighting. For some strange reason, the pools don’t have lines on the bottom. I had a tough time judging distance approaching the walls without the “T” at each end. That made flip turns difficult to execute.
So it looks like it’s a tossup between the gators in the lake or kids in the river. Hmmmm…I need to work on my speed but i already swim under enough distress, so I’m leaning towards the lazy river. Besides, wouldn’t I look cool if I show up in a wet suit, line up my 3 bottles of e-load for the swim and bagel and a protein shake for after, put on my fins and hand paddles, tether one of those blue floaties to my waist (just in case I get in trouble), wink and the lifeguard…and jump in. Of course I would have to make a huge scene if someone runs into me and demand to see the course director. Ok…Gators It Is…
There’s also the YMCA on International Drive that’s reasonably close to the parks:
you want a good workout, go here: http://www.ichetuckneeriver.com/
I think this is the place I went when I was younger, crystal clear water, and a pretty good current. I heard that UF swims against the current there sometimes for workouts.
In true ST fashion of course!!!
That would be a great youtube clip.

I did this this morning for the first time since my pool is closed for renovations. It is only 5 minutes from my office, why haven’t I done this before. It was awesome.
