I am talking about the cone shaped levers that Profile sold several years ago. I know Peter Reid still uses them on his Carbon X bars as late as last years Hawaii IM. Has anybody seen these for sale lately? Anybody the name of them? Thanks for your help.

I have only seen them on ebay. If you get a pair, make sure that your life insurance policy is paid up.
I have successfully fitted them to the cut ends of my Carbon X bars. My setup is exactly like Perter Reids. It took quite some engineering as they dont snugly fit the ends correctly. You have to carefully (and riskly) grind the carbon away to make them fit. Found mine on ebay - have only ever come accross then rarely from time to time. And yes, take out some insurance, they are extremely aero, but function less than 5/10
“Depending on mount, you brake by pushing down or pulling up.”
pushing down…that seems suicidal…esp on a steep descent…
I think I remember seeing some at Schwab Cycles not too long ago:
At one time they also had them at Big Ring Cycles:
Thanks for finding them for me I have been wanting a pair. I want to mount them on my carbon X and cut the bullhorn exactly like Reid. Why all the cautions/life insurance stuff? Is there a reason they didn’t sell them very long? Anyone with experience?
It’s harder to stop with them. Be really careful in hilly and heavily trafficed areas.
i raced them last year, they are swank, but they’re not brakes , i called them speed modulators. if it’s wet it’ll take like 3 times the distance to stop… not light either
i’m getting the vision Tyler levers lite aero & cool
If they go on a flat course bike, they’ll be fine. But I have two situations that I will plead with you not to use them in:
-
Any Campy brakes. Campy brakes need a lever with a QR, period. I say it especially in the case of tyre changes, and the like. Some will disagree with me here, but my opinion is that Campy brakes mate best with Campy levers. I personally think that all levers should have the QR in them, as it is not only cheaper to manufacture, but it saves weight over the cam lever on a brake caliper.
-
Centre-pull brakes like the Campy Delta, Hooker, Zipp, or Modolo Kronos, along with the old Dura Ace AX. These brakes are not the greatest for front brakes, and they’ll even be worse with a lever like the one you’re thinking of going with.
Just be safe and use common sense when using these brake levers. If the course is particularly technical, go with another pair of levers or your road bike, as panic stops are not easy AT ALL with these (having pulled myself from a straw bale in a crash in a race one with these levers on the bike). But damn! Do they look BADASS!!!
