According to your chart, they’re off competing in individual sports that likely pay a lot better… /pink
^^ Ha ha ha.
Werd
We have a few on ST that I’m aware of. I don’t know if Jaylew or Vols Fan are still around or posting under different handles.
I’ve seen a few black triathletes at local events but not many. Seen quite a few Asians, but for the most part triathlon is still mostly a rich white boy (and girl) sport.
Maybe they are all secure in their accomplishments and do not feel the need to dominate yet another sport!
Hey I’m originally from a swimming/surfing background and believe me I see a lot more black triathletes than black surfers.
.
Quite a few in the DC area
.
There are definitively some I am sure.
However maybe I am wrong but when I watch a swim meet (mostly Olympics, World/Euro championship, etc.) or cycling (mostly Le Tour, Vuelta, Giro and some classics) I do not see a lot (and sometimes 0) black folks.
On the other hand when I watch some running, they are all over the places but mostly @ the sprint level.
So maybe there is a link between the above and the fact there is (maybe) not that many black triathletes? (i.e. maybe it is a culture thing, a physiological thing, etc…)
Fred.
blackies don’t do stupid shit.

…or 10k, 15k, 20k, and especially marathon. Boston=1 white guy in lead pack: Ryan Hall
I’m around, Cerveloguy. I haven’t done a tri in a number of years, divorce and 2 rotator cuff surgeries have thrown me off track. I’ve been concentrating on the bike, but I think my shoulders may hold up to do a sprint in the fall. I know a number of Black triathletes here in AZ…we’re around.
Chris McCormack hasn’t done too badly.
Not sure about Canada , but there are loads of Asian triathletes over here , in Singapore.
Japan has a large following as you will notice in Kona. Running in Japan is a very popular and honoured sport.
Malaysia and Hong Kong , per capita , have a pretty decent following as well.
Think it depends where you are.
When I raced Kona in 2005 , a big negro guy finished one place in front of me. I recall from the results that he was from the Bronx.
Over here in SEA I don’t recall seeing any though. Although plenty of Africans from Kenya , Ethiopia and Tanzania show up at the cash races.
Terry
This is a good time to recall this: (scroll to the bottom of the entry for the shout-out to triathletes)

One of the funniest sites ever
.

LOL!
I see very few even here in NYC. There are a fair amount of serious cyclists though, and of course runners. Whole teams targeted at African Americans, but none for triathlon that I’m aware of.
If Silverman Tri was still offering $100K to crack 8:00 for a relay, those dudes would make one hell of a team.
Right here.
Looks like you guys are doing better than us - never seen a black triathlete in Europe, and only met one ever - a yank at IMNZ last year. Still mainly seen as a rich, white sport over here.
Glad to hear you’re still around VF. I remember you had some changes going on last time we talked.
