When you cant run

is it worth doing aquajogging? or should i just do lots n lots of cycling n swimming?

aqua jogging is extremely boring but a good substitute. I’ve seen people run fantasticly after only doing that for months.

might go do some of that then.

injured mate? You did Taupo though eh?

100% yes! The wife did water running almost exclusively from mid June through IMC, and set a 1h15 PB, including a run PB by 30min. I do it as part of my regular training, to get some consistency without the pain.

YES YES YES. Aquarunning is very good and helps keep those running muscles working. I raced a LD tri once after 1.5 months of aquarunning (with workouts that would reach 1h:20m) to fight a ITBS and it worked very well.
Is it boring? YES but it makes you tough minded

Uhm… aquajogging…?? NO…

It’s only worth to do AQUARUNNING! :stuck_out_tongue: You should do it in the same target zone you used to run. Take your HRM with you and keep track of your pulse. If you aren’t on the target zone, don’t even bother to do it

I would like to use my stupid question token:

What’s constitutes “aqua running”?

How deep of water?

Wear special shoes?

How long of workout?

One of those funny belts?

Sprints, distance or time?

Is there such thing as an aqua running threadmill?

k

Depending on the nature of your injury… If you can find a machine called a Versa Climber this could be the go. It has the potential to be pure evil, even worse than a concept 2 rowing erg. It is non impact but weight bearing and will build running strength like uphill run workouts.

I have only ever seen 1 in NZ and that was in Auckland but you may be lucky. Would probably be ok with injuries like shin splints, compartment syndrome, plantar fascitis and maybe ITB problems.

Aqua running is running under water…

Put “one of those funny belts” around your waist, go to a non-foot pool and run vertically just as you were running on the road.

For how long? Same time you would run on the road if you could.

TIME… no sprints or distance…

No idea…

What’s constitutes “aqua running”?

Jump in and start making your legs move as if you were running on land. You won’t be able to exactly mimic your on-land stride, but you can get close.

How deep of water?

Deep enough where you cannot touch the bottom while you run.

Wear special shoes?

Nope, at least not starting out. You can wear some old running shoes if you need to increase the intensity down the road.

How long of workout?

As long as you can tolerate  As others have said, it’s extremely mind numbing. I would at least go for 30-45min…the longest I ever could muster was 2 hours (my “long run” for the week).

One of those funny belts?

**Depends on your body composition, but for a better workout–no belt. You may need it starting out but try to wean yourself off it, and you’ll find the workout gets much more intense. **

Sprints, distance or time?

**I always went for time, since there’s no way to judge distance. You can definitely mix in some pick-ups/sprints/intervals…whatever. It helps to break up the monotony. I found many webpages out there with sample workouts, try a Google search. **

Is there such thing as an aqua running threadmill?

Never heard of one.

Good luck!

yeah i got a foot injury, just under outside of ankle and across the top. i did aquajogging last nite. it got pretty boring so i would do each last 5m of 25m as a sprint.

Just curious… how do you manage that… aqua-running without those funny belts? I can’t stand vertically in the water (without touching the bottom) without the belt!!

Do you stand vertically on your aqua-runs?

"Just curious… how do you manage that… aqua-running without those funny belts? I can’t stand vertically in the water (without touching the bottom) without the belt!!

Do you stand vertically on your aqua-runs?"

If you can tread water upright, then you can aqua run upright without a belt. Now, you may only be able to hold form for 30 seconds before going under…but I never said it was easy  When I first went sans belt, I never thought I’d last even more than 5 minutes. But after just a few days, I found that once I reached a certain point (~10 min), I felt like I could go on for a long long time (ie…it didn’t get progressively move difficult to remain afloat). And I did–2 hrs was my longest. Good luck.

I couldnt run most of last season. I made up for it with a lot of biking. It helped.

I tried it last summer for a week due to a minor injury. Running is boring enough compared to the bike IMO, but doing it in the pool is really a yawner. But it does seem to work as a temporty substitute.
