When to replace chain and/or cassette?

Mechanic at the LBS put the fear of god in me about timely replacement of my chain. Although it has over 5,500 miles on it, when I use the park tool to measure it, the 50% side slips in easily but the 75% side does not. When I use a ruler to measure, I get 12 complete links measuring 12 1/16". Do I need to replace it? FWIW, I’m a light rider, only ride in the rain when caught in it (1 or 2 times a year), and lube the chain after nearly every ride.

And how will I know when it’s time to change the cassette? Right now it seems to shift fine. Thanks.

Replace it. 1/16" should not have worn the cassette, but you will find fairly quickly once you put the new chain on it.

Personally I’m horrible about keeping track of mileage on various parts. I’ve gotten into the habit of replacing the chain and cables (brake and shifter) each spring.

thanks
