The swimming with children thread reminded me of a question that I’ve been meaning to post on this forum - what age do folks generally stop running with their kids in the stroller? What do you do as an alternative? Do they bike beside you (willingly, for 90 min runs…)?
I am thinking when their combined weight is higher than my own. Got a ways go, they plus the stroller are around 50%.
I don’t think there is set age number. I basically stopped the stroller thing when my son 3 or 4 (can’t remember exactly), but I did a half marathon with him in a stroller when he was 5. We weren’t using a stroller otherwise but we couldn’t find a sitter so I pushed him.

Oh good! I was actually wondering if I’d have to stop shooting for ‘Stroller PRs’ - it was getting a bit depressing otherwise to see my race times slow precipitously after going from like 70+ mpw as a pure runner to like <25 mpw as a new dad. I’m looking forward to 4-5 years of stroller PRs!
As the others said above around age 3 was when I stopped and then they will bike with you while you run but not for 90 mins. The best age for bike while running I found was about 6 or 7. About the longest I could get my kids to that was about 40 to 60 minutes total.
FWIW, I see kids in strollers (not jogger) that are waaaaayyyyyy too big to be in a stroller. I talking about feet touching the ground big. The kids are almost always fat.
It makes me sad.
Gets those kids moving.
My son (7) rides his bike to school with me or mom about half of the time. It’s only 1 mile but it’s up hill (both ways! in the snow!). I’ve noticed he has more energy after school at home on the days he rides his bike. His teacher has also commented that he’s more attentive and energetic on the days he rides.
Go figure.
I was 75 mpw once too. Now I have two kiddos. I love 25 mpw times. Most of the time my long run equals my weekly mileage. I know, I know, I know, But it is what I have to work with.
I never thought of a stroller PR. Perhaps we should have a stroller division. Maybe standardize it with weights so those of us with skinny kids are not at an advantage to the people raising fatties. Oh wait, then the skinny kid people would sue. Nevermind.

After the second injury due to the affect of the stroller on your mechanics. Or maybe the first.
I pushed the kiddos for a couple of years. My ortho told me he should give baby joggers to people given they were so good for his business.
Despite years of my youth spent riding my Bmx alongside dad on his runs, I can’t get my kids to tag along today.
Good luck,
Scott
When they can ride beside you!
My K just upgraded her ride from a 16" to a 24" (major growth spurt eh?) and on a flat it’s tough for me to keep up with her now! Great fartlek training!

When they get too bored to even sleep in it while you run, or when even the game apps on the iPhone stopped entertaining them & they just wanted to go home. End of sneaking in a run with them.

A kiddie klydesdale division perhaps?

I also think so.

When you realize how little your kid is getting out of the experience. When they’re completely non-walkers, and they mainly sleep in the stroller, then fine. Once they are trying to walk etc. - let them.
There was a thread on here a while ago about a guy pulling his kid on training rides all the time, and people chimed in as though it was quality time with his kid. Huh?
My son is now 21 and over 6’4". I ran with him in a stroller until he was six - and it he was tall at 6. It was a great time for both of us and it gave my then stay at home wife a break. I had a light on it for night runs and had a Walkman with external speakers. Those were the days. I miss em.

I thought I was just an idiot for having a hard time figuring out how to run with this thing. I have 7 week old, and have been doing all my runs with the running stroller over the past 3 weeks. I can deal with the slightly slower pace, but I’m starting to feel some aches in places that I normally don’t.
Anyone have luck running 30+mpw with a stroller without injury?
Yeah that’s a good point. I think my daughter will be the one to decide when stroller runs stop.
She still seems to enjoy or least tolerate the stroller. She’s dropped her afternoon nap but still needs a bit of sleep during the day. Stroller time is perfect for that. But even if she doesn’t sleep, we often have conversations (despite breathlessness on my part), it gives Mom a break and I often plan for the run to end up at a playground so that she’ll have time to get out and play. Also, I think just being outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and checking out the scenery is healthy. It’s chill time for both her and I.
Sorry to hear - that sucks. I am fairly tall so pushing the stroller requires a bit of hunching or leaning. Hasn’t caused me an injury though. I often get fidgety though and frequently switch hands and my body position relative to the stroller (i.e., directly behind it or off to one of the sides). Maybe more varied pushing postures could help prevent injury?
I did almost all of my CdA and AZ run training last year with my 2 year old in the stroller. Max I could do before she got restless was about 6 miles. Never had any injuries and my training was fine for both races. This year I’m running a lot more and longer too so I just run at night.
