When do you replace cleats?

how often should you replace cleats. Ive been having some problems with my knees/quads, my vestus lateralis (sp?), keeps spasming. I think it may be because my foot seems to roll outward when i push down. my cleats are real worn, maybe two years of real abuse in the words of down periscope, “the birds%$t is the only thing holding the rust together, I need a tetnus shot just looking at her”

apolack1,

I tried to resist responding but I could not.

After reading your description of your cleats and the wear accumulated on them I wish to draw a parallel and let you be the judge.

I would expect that if you were describing your tires and asking the same question it would go like this: “The rubber tread is worn through and I can see the casing threads all the way around the entire tire. The inner tube will sometimes poke through and burst but I boot the tire and it keeps going. I just don’t know if it is time to replace the tire though. Would replacing the tire reduce the frequency that I am experiencing flats?”

would help if you provided the type of cleat you are using.

As for Look style cleats, they have a wear sensor in the front. Its a little hole. when the wear hits the hole, its time to replace. (Not actually looking at them right now, but that little hole is there to indicate when to replace them.)

I once wore the screw down so far that there was no way to remove it with a screwdriver. I had to get a special tool. Replace before this happens.

Plus, sounds like you are definitely having some problems. Why not replace to see if that’s the key? New cleats are only around $15. That’s not much to ward off muscle spasams.
