Wheel weight question

I was going to go with a set of Zipp’s for race wheels, the 404’s or 606’s (not decided on either Clin/Tub). However I would like to now if anyone runs a built wheel with a powertap (1050grams) and slaps on a CH Aero Disc (540grams) for races? Is this to much extra weight for a race wheel? Thats 1590 grams for just the back and over a pound heavier that a 808 or a tri-spoke. Does training and racing with a powertap (and disc cover for races), if done correctly, make up for that extra weight? FYI - all of my 40k TT races are flat with low to moderate winds.

Do any races with steep hills?

Don’t worry about the weight if your courses are flat.

No big hills in my Triathlon races. I would use my road bike with PT wheel (without disc) for my Road races.

Drock,

There are a number of Forum members who race with the CH Aero wheel cover and a few of them use it to race on their PTs. I haven’t ever heard them ever reply that they felt there was any significant disadvantage to their performance in a race for having done so. If anything, they were advocates for doing this.

They will tell you, quit sitting on the fence and just do it! After next year, you will be glad you did.

You undoubtedly have spent $75 (approx cost of CH Areo wheel cover) on any number of bike related things in the past. Do you consider every one of those purchases a waste. In the end, what’s $75?

You will most likely learn more about maximizing your race performance by analyzing the data from your PT during a number of races and improve your racing performance much faster than by having purchased a disc and done nothing else.

Equipment is highly over rated. Investing in your “engine” and your “head” will pay bigger dividends than investing in equipment. After you have done this, you will be better able to reap the rewards of investing in equipment.

I do!

We have a 40K TT out here in Oregon, well this course is in trout lake WA. But it has one 1+ mile hill at 7% on the way out then rolls down to the turn around then back up what you just came down so it’s 3 to 5% with 3 short stiff climb on the way back, but then you get to rip down the 7% hill and flat to rolling to the finish. my best time this season was 1:09:09 for 4th place in the open masters field.

And I run my Spinergy Rev-X in the front and my Renn 575 in the rear.
