Wheel Upgrade: Enve 8.9 vs Zipp 808/Disc

here is my first post…many thanks in advance, lurking in the forum has been incredibly helpful in my newbie journey into triathlons.

Have some cash burning a hole in my pocket at the moment and looking to upgrade/add a wheelset. Currently have 2014 404 front / 808 rear tubular on a P3. My LBS tells me the best wheels around are the ENVE 8.9 tubulars. I do like ENVE as a brand but I wonder if a 808/Disc set-up won’t be faster? Cost differences not really an issue, just looking for the fastest wheel set-up. Maybe I should consider something else?

In case it’s relevant I’m 5’7 / 145lbs / I’ll crank out a 70.3 at just about 200NP…hopefully will get better over time.

Thanks!

There’s a set of Reynolds RZR 92 in the classifieds. Buy those instead.

If you’re settled between those two choices go disc unless you plan on racing Kona.

I have a hard time believing an 8.9 set is faster than an 808/disc. There may be a certain yaw angle where it is, but across all yaw angles, go for the disc.

I run a 1080 with a disc and it’s awesome. Rear disc wheels are a great investment and would definantly be an improvement over your 808.

Why not an Enve 8 tubuarl front and a rear disc? Best of both worlds for racing IMO…

If you look carefully enough, you should be able to score an Enve 8 front tubular custom built up on a lightweight racing hub for $1200-$1400 by a boutique builder (rather than dishing out $3400+ for a full 8.9 set built w/ CK r45s mostly available from bigger-box stores). Then, add the disc of your choice… That’s what I originally did, then later supplemented and added the .9 tubular rear after the fact as another race-day option. The disc is slightly faster, but the stability of the 8.9 as a full set is confidence-boosting for those trickier days and more technical courses.

I assume you mentioned the first to your lbs to get the second.

The problem is that your current wheels are so good, any improvement would be infinitesimal.

Can’t think of any better way to burn through that extra cash? Wild weekend of hookers and blow, maybe? Feeding a couple thousand starving kids in Africa? Steroids? Wind tunnel trip?

If you are looking for the fastest wheel set-up, why are you looking at Tubulars? Don’t want to ignite the pitchforks but the smart money in triathlon are all riding clinchers. With that being said, the CC Zipp 808 and Super-9 are a great set of wheels - never used the tubular version of them.

This.
Look at fork or cockpit upgrades instead.
Or better tires.

That made my day!!!

And, dollar for seconds saved; rruff is - spot on.

how about a “cover” for the rear 808? (http://www.wheelbuilder.com/aero-disc-covers.html). Get the black. I have white and they looked great for one ride. Then some chain grease and road grime got on them and they’re grey. But they are still fast.

Now you’ll have lots of money for the Hookers.

Just keep your wheels lmao there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Disc is fastest no way non disc is gonna test faster. I wouldn’t buy enve if they cost more maybe get enve front and disc back if you’re feeling a little bit turnt up off tha purple sticky sensimilla like a gold mouth icy goon hoe ya no wut I’m sayin bruhhhh like hella art

Enve front and drag2zero disc if money not a huge factor and want tubs. They look a nice pairing.

I have a brand new set of Reynolds 72/90 for sale. I’m too new to slowtwitch so can’t post them yet in the Classifieds, but they are 2015 new in box. I bought them for TT’s in stage races (I’m a roadie), but decide to just do the clip-on aero bar route with my road bike. I have 100% ebay feedback and don’t want to give them 10% in fees!! PM!

Yes and more yes!

I went from cheap V shape 80mm front and 100mm rear with disc cover to 808 and Zipp disc (2nd hand mind.) I couldn’t tell if there was any difference speed wise. I’d get a disc cover for your 808 and perhaps get an 808 for the front. For what it’s worth I’m getting rid of my zipp disc and using a 35mm wheel I already have and a disc cover and I’m still using the 808. Why? the disc was a poor spend of money when compared to a disc cover for little or no benefit, other than looking cool - that wore off quickly though. The 808 (until the hub recall…) was good though. If I did it all over again I’d probably not have bought the Zipps in the first place and would have kept the original cheap V rims.

Iain

you got the $ spend it who cares, disk and 808 all the way, will look really cool at least, whatever you have left save for the hookers and blow.

Not sure if you’ll get any performance increase by upgrading, but at least get clinchers. Most tubulars will be slower.

+1, I’m not sure why anyone would buy tubs these days unless you are racing CX.

Load of balls.

Get the Super 9. I just bought one and it’s very nice. For most courses, discs are faster.
