Wheel skewers. Do they make a difference?

Should I bother with replacing my tacx trainer skewer for my original shimano skewer for a race?

Lighter is better. Otherwise there’s no difference.

Probably not a huge diff, but of course lighter is good especially if it’s hilly, and on some the lever seems to stick out more while others appear more aero. Perhaps a bigger issue if you’re running a frame w/ rear wheel cut-out and horizontal dropouts, you need to be sure your QR offers enough clamping leverage/grip to keep the wheel from torquing out of alignment and possibly even rubbing the frame.

a heavier skewer never did anybody’s race any harm.

dumbass light skewers with shitty mechanisms ( which nearly all “light” ones have ) have ruined many.

Switch out the skewer for the shimano. It takes only a minute. I agree with the comment that the weight of a skewer doesn’t make much difference, but there is no need to carry any more weight than needed. Also agree that some of the ultra lightweight skewers out there hold for crap.

(reading as I guard another set of new Ultegra skewers).

Function is a good thing. Most times, it’s a great thing. Shimano skewers are very nice.

Martin, guess you’ve never tried them on a Wolf TT fork  (you don’t need to answer that)

To the OP, the only thing that matters is if they lock the wheel in securely. A non-issue for your situation but I guess as advice to others, before dropping coin on some bling skewers do check that they actually fit your dropouts…

Should be a non-issue, you can use it.

Uh oh…I just ordered Shimano skewers for a Wolf CL. Am I going to have a problem?

Nothing that a Dremel can’t fix.

But I have to say the Wolf TT had about the stupidest, most F-ed up wheel retention crap on it that I have ever seen since the CPSC came out with the law.

But in the big picture, saving a few grams on a skewer is a dumb place to save weight when it let’s you rear wheel move around in a horizontal dropout.

The TT has deep circular recessions around the dropout…unfortunately the one-piece clamping “head” (sorry, don’t know the proper term) on the Ultegra skewer is a fraction too large in diameter to sit flush. With reference to the post above, yes they can probably be machined out. I went with a slightly smaller two-piece instead. The CL & SL are slightly different designs but I have no personal experience with them so sorry I can’t answer your question specifically. It is interesting that Cervelo changed to Shimano wheels as standard equipment on these bikes the same year they introduced the CL & SL forks but I don’t know with what quick-release skewer they are specced…

Old Shimano 600; they wrap right around the tube.

probably will never make any difference in your bike leg. I used to use Titanium skewers until I found out that they were the problem when my rear wheel shifted in the dropouts, slammed the tire against the chain stay, slid my bike sideways and came to a full stop all in about 2 seconds. It was getting ugly, as this happened about 6 times until I found that it was the light weight titanium skewer. Once I changed back to a regular, heavier, skewer, it never happened again.

Okay, I have two sets. One set of Bontragers that came with my Trek Equinox TTX 9.9 and one set of Zipps. I usually just leave my zipp one with my race wheels (606’s) and my Bontrager ones with the ones that came with the bike. What I noticed tonight was that the rear Bontrager is a little warped. Does this make a difference? Or is it just the clamping force that matters? Oh, and are the Zipp skewers crap? Sorry to steal the post, but it did make me go look at mine when I read it.

Yes…Zipp skewers are crap. I expect a better product from them.

I have these, no problem so far.

I’m surprised to hear about problems with titanium skewers. I have a set of M2s, Zipps, and Mavics and have had no problems with any of them.

cool another rationalization I can use for poor performance
.

Were you having this problem with Zipp skewers (the black ones)? Tim

I don’t think they were ZIpps, though it ain’t out of the question. They were very light wieght titanium skewers, but it was like 7 years ago and I really don’t remember the brand. But it was a “name” brand.
