Wheel Set Up for Syracuse 70.3

Those who raced the course last-year, or have ridden it this year, what are your opinions? Per the last thread on the course profile, it is kind of hard to make a % grade judgement based on what they have posted. Would you run a disc in the back…or, are there lots of short sharp uphills, turns on the way up, etc…

In short, I’m trying to figure out if I should try and get my hands on a disc for the rear, or just roll with my Cosmic Carbones (rear and front) that are 52mm deep. Look forward to hearing your thoughts here.

I did the race in 2010 (same bike course) and rode a disc. No problems at all. Doing it again this year and will ride a disc again.

Disc, easy choice.

Ride the disc. Longest / steepest hill is straight and about 6ish% and maybe 1/4 mile.

Am I missing somethimg? The bike profile has a 9 mile long climb of 1200’ coming out of T2.

I ride discs in all my races but in Syracuse was waivering to race on 808’s instead.

The first 20 miles are climbs. They tend to roll more than a direct climb. I have ridden it both years, you will be fine with a disc. The first climb is steep but only lasts for 300m or so.

Not sure why it shows 1200’ out of transition.

That’s only 9 miles out of 56… The entire second half of the course looks to be downhill or short rollers after that.

The profile shows 1150 feet over 11 miles, about. That works out to a 2% grade average. That should be a pretty easy climb for most people. Not sure why everyone is in a panic.

Not sure if you saw this posted on the other thread. As others have said, sure miles 3 to 12 are mostly climbing and there are two short, sharp, steep climbs later on. But the last 10 is mostly down hill with opportunity to really open it up if you have saved some energy, or to recoup a little if you over did it earlier. Disc all the way! None of the hills has any “twisty bits”. The first steep section at about 21 miles on the graph above is immediately preceeded by the same grade down, I hit 54mph on it the first year, then use that momentum as much as you can for the climb up the other side and within a couple of minutes of effort, you’re at the top!

Mate,
I live in Florida, the only hill I have near me is a small bridge for 1/4 mile long…
I can ride 56 miles and gain whole 42’ elevation…

Oh no, no, no.

I’m racing this one.

Box rims with gatorskins for everybody!
