I am looking to purchase some carbon wheels, and would like some input on rim height. I normally do a few sprints each year, and either a oly or a 1/2 IM, I would like to do another IM in the near future. I’m leaning toward a 40mm rim, but I haven’t ruled out 50mm or 60mm. 80-ish mm are also an option. I love the way the wheels look, but I think they would be rarely used. For the type of racing I’m doing, what is your experience and recommendations. The terrain where I’m located is rolling hills, to flat. Currently I’m committed to White Lake Sprint (pancake flat), Nations Tri, Beach to Battleship 1/2.
You are looking at triathlon/TT race wheels? Why are you not getting the deepest wheels you can (i.e. rear disc/cover and 90 front)? Other than being a triathlete with questionable handling skills or a 110 lb female running an 808 in the winds at Kona, a 40mm -60mm rim is the new road/crit racing wheel depth
Get the deepest wheels you can ride. As a 175lb guy, I ride at least twin 90mm wheels and throw in a rear disc when able. The whole wind thing is made up by 125lb guys and gals.
A 60mm/90mm combination can be a good choice that you can easily ride even in very blustery conditions…Of course a rear disc is OK even in some pretty bad conditions…so it’s always smart to pick any rear you want and throw on a disc cover.
It all depends…
If the following is true:
- You are doing WhiteLake II (Sat., May 8)
- You are in the 25-30 AG
Then you should use the heaviest non-aerodynamic wheel you can find.
If either 1 or 2 above is false then use a deep front and back and throw a wheelcover on the back for longer distances.
I appreciate all the info. My weight fluctuates between 165-175 during the year so I don’t think I would get blown around too much. (P3-sl I’m in the 35-40 AG so no worries.) I’m torn between DEEP, and something that I can throw on the road bike for some everyday riding. Maybe I need two sets :).
Go with a quality 60mm front and back (for everyday) and then if the terrain/race warrants it throw a $50 wheel cover on the back and you have one of the fastest options out there…from 60-90mm front or back we are only talking a few sec. anyway.
rear disc (cover if you are on a budget)
hed jet 90 or 808 front
if you want a dual purpose wheel, then 404s or jet60s front and rear, with a cover on the rear for triathlons
however, if you are like me, you will not want to worry about valve extenders and crap for everyday riding.

Can’t go wrong with a set of Zipp 404s!
80-100mm rims might be a tad deep if you are any place with cross winds (or go 404 front, 808 back).
40mm wheels are really not deep enough to offer enough advantage.
