What's your training scheduele look like?

I find it odd that people here very frequently post about things that make a minor difference (wheelsets) and not about what make a major difference (training). The monthly swim goal posts were pretty cool.

I’m just curious how everyone else is training. I don’t know if this isn’t shared here because people don’t want to be criticized, people want to keep their sched top secret, or because everyone is doing almost the same thing and it is boring to discuss.

It’s usually my favorite part of the magazines or articles on athletes - looking at how they trained at different stages for different events. Granted, what a pro does and what I do is different, but it still gives me ideas.

I have IMFL as my A race this year and this is what my training week looks like:

Mon AM - 90 min masters + bike 45 zone 2

Tues AM - Track Speed workout
Tues PM - Lift

Wed AM - 90 min masters + bike interval work (4-6 x (4 min hard, 2 min recover)) + hard 5k or 10k run

Thurs AM - 45 min bike Z2 + Track Speed Workout
Thurs PM - Lift

Fri AM - 90 min masters + run 30 min zone 2
Fri PM - Lift

Sat AM - Long Bike + Run brick (Zone 2)

Sun AM (or PM) - Long Run (Zone 2)

All that’s missing is really a long, easy open water swim. The way I like to look at the calandar is to pull it apart and look at what I am doing run-wise, then bike-wise, and swim-wise all seperately.

.

somehow, I knew that was coming…

In Sergio’s blog (http://sergio-marques.blog.com/2007/6/18/) he wrote that he was advised to stop posting on internet forums. I wonder if the problems that Sergio is having with his federation (not sending him to the long distance triathlon European championship) is really more a reflection on his coach Paulo and all the asinine posts Paulo makes on Slowtwitch.

Is Paulo’s posts on Slowtwitch rubbing Sergio’s federation the wrong way and causing problems for Sergio?

Just an observation, if you’re consistently doing two track workouts, and a hard 5-10k workout each week (along w/the 30 min and long run)…you’ll be lucky to be healthy enough to race IMFL. This obviously depends on what you call a “track” workout. But, if it was me, I’d be injured.

There are a bunch of reasons why I don’t talk openly on the forum about the specifics of my training schedule, and I’m sure they’re shared by others here as well:

  1. Talking sometimes leads to unproductive second-guessing of your program, and can result in inconsistency. It’s better to develop an approach that works and then apply it consistently than to jump from one approach to another, always looking for something better.
  2. There’s not much that anyone can learn from one training week from one athlete, taken out of context. I don’t know how fast you are, how long you’ve been training, your specific strengths and weaknesses, how you adjust your training week-to-week and over the course of a year, etc. Entering into a discussion that covers all of the above takes a lot of time - there’s a reason coaches charge you for it!
  3. It’s difficult to judge the quality of information you’re being presented with, when you know very little about the person providing it. I’ve never met anyone who posts on this forum, so apart from a few who have posted enough quality stuff for me to trust that they know what they’re talking about, I’d prefer not to follow the advice of strangers.

For all of the reasons above, I tend to talk directly via PM or email with just a couple of people who provide advice that I trust, rather than open my training up to the floor. You know what they say about opinions…

I dont do my workouts on specific days, i like having flexibility in my training but that said i have some general workouts i get in every week, regardless of the day.

Swim - 4+ times a week in the pool, open water swim in the ocean once a week.
Bike - 1 trainer session, mainly for 1 leg drills and intervals, 1 hill repeat day, 1 interval/speed work day(sometimes on trainer), 1 long ride day.
Run - Every day at least 4 mi no matter what is on the schedule, most days its a 8-10mi excluding recovery runs and speedwork. Speedwork once a week and a 10-12mi run barefoot on the beach once a week also.
Gym - 3-4 times a week for strength training, core work and flexibility exercises.
I do a good brick on whatever day i do my long ride(usually sat or sun) and will brick once or twice after a bike workout throughout the week.
Next race is an oly in 2 weeks, then nothing serious until september which should be a boston qf marathon and im pretty sure im going to sign up for the silverman full this week. Right now im doing a lot of speed work for the oly but after that, in preparation for silverman and the mary, ill be running a little more mileage(every day), ill run hills at least once a week and my long run will be much longer than 10-12mi. I’ll also be biking one other day, likely hill work.

Looks like a good late build/peak schedule for a short courser.

Last week:

Sat - 2 X 45 min. almost all-out Crits
Sun - 100K hard ride with bike club
Mon - Nothing
Tuesday - Nothing
Wed - 45 minutes on the rollers
Thurs - Think it was nothing. Can’t remember!
Fri - Nothing

SUNDAY, AUGUST 26TH: IRONMAN CANADA!

I typically go with a short taper which works well for me, and I don’t use any electronics other than a bike computer for speed/distance. No HRM, power meter, etc. I realize my training plan is pretty basic, but it works for my lifestyle and I’m not in contention for a Kona slot anyway. This training plan was similar to what I did for IMFL last fall and I finished in 12 hours and raced a 1/2 IM the following weekend, so it seemed to serve me well.

Quoting Paulo: “It’s amusing to see how clueless you are.”…
Triathlon is not just Slowtwitch, in fact I doubt that most of the people in the Portuguese Federation even know that Slowtwitch exists…

Anyway, just for your information, Sergio’s (eventual) problem are related to other aspects, other posts (in other forum) and a long old story…

If you are informed about Triathlon, and follow it in the entire scene, you will notice that Portuguese national athletes mostly (not to say only) race short course, and even these have to be ITU “approved”.

I only do olys and a few half IMs. Here’s what I try to fit in during a week. Yes I know I don’t run near enough but that’s about all I take without breaking down.

Monday: swim 2100 yards or rest day.

Tuesday: swim 2100 yards, bike 50-60 miles, both a.m.

Wednesday: Swim/run brick. Swim 1600/run 6-8.

Thursday: Swim 2000-2200 a.m. Bike 40 p.m.

Friday: a.m. Swim 2000 yards. p.m. run 8

Saturday: Bike 50-60

Sunday: “long” run of 10-12.

So… It was Paulo.

Jay

For a 70.3 did you keep use the same basic schedule and increase your bike & run mileage for an IM?

Have a happy 4th

It always seems to me that everyone spends too much time building the sickest bike, and not nearly enough time riding it.

In other words, it’s because of Paulo.

It always seems to me that everyone spends too much time building the sickest bike, and not nearly enough time riding it.

I do note that in many of the bike pics posted here, the bikes are extraordinarily clean and do not have one nick or scratch anywhere on the bike.

I then need to post a pic of my bike to change that
By bike I meant the training/race bike with the training/race wheels with the training/race tires without a powermeter or cadence meter or powercranks:)

Cheers,
Fred.

O-M-G… Thanks for a good laugh!
